cheesecake tasting

Last night I felt well enough to go to a friend’s house for dinner and cheesecake tasting. Her daughter is getting married in the fall, and she wants cheesecake. To cut costs, she is just going to buy a boatload of frozen cheesecakes instead of having one custom baked. Here’s the spread:

Going clockwise from the bottom lefthand corner, there’s the New York Cheesecake from Trader Joe’s, a cappuccino mousse cake (I know, NOT cheesecake, but my friend’s husband was hungry when they went shopping and insisted they buy it), Costco frozen cheesecake, the small one from Smart & Final (billed as a restaurant supply sort of grocery), and a Sara Lee raspberry swirly thing (doesn’t it look like one of those toaster pastries?). Anyway, it was really fun tasting them all. My personal fave was the Trader Joe’s one. It had the creamiest texture, and I really like a creamy cheesecake. The Smart & Final one was horrid–rubbery and gelatinous. The Sara Lee one was a hit with some, but I thought it was sickeningly sweet. The cappuccino one looked good, but it tasted too bitter and fake. We all concluded that the best and most practical was the Costco cheesecake. It is firm but not hard, and it comes presliced. 16 slices for 10 bucks is hard to beat! So there you have it.
I guess my sweater has been doing some talking while I’ve been ill. Thanks for all your collar suggestions! I’ll be doing some experimenting and most likely will need more help!

I would head out to the Cheesecake Factory for a variety of good cheesecakes.

I’ve been to a cake tasting, and many cheese tastings, but never a cheesecake tasting. I clearly have the wrong friends.

Glad to hear you’re feeling better now, and I’m curious to see what you decide to do with your collar. By the way, are you going to bake something pink for Valentine’s Day?

I don’t know where in Chicago you live, but on the northwest side, probably even in Norridge is the Eli Cheesecake warehouse/factory. They occassionally have factory sales, so you might want to let your friend now they should keep that in mind as an option too. The warehouse is on Forest Preserve Dr. between Harlem and Narragansett. I didn’t know about it until I moved into the Portage Park neighborhood and I still haven’t stopped by yet.
