and once again it’s all about candy

But this time, it’s all about peppermint candy! After many struggles, I finally completed the peppermint candy 2x2x3x1 ribby, a fabulous FREE pattern by the incredibly talented Bonne Marie. I knit FOUR sleeves for this (and yes, I wish I had 2 extra arms, but I don’t), and after I finished the entire body, I considered ripping the whole thing apart and starting the body over. I was concerned that I had made it too short and too small (unlike the last sweater, bpt, which came out too big! Please send good knitting karma my way). I decided just to block it and move on with life, though, because a) it’s been 85 degrees here, and I just wanted to get the wool/acrylic lump out of my lap, b) I was/am lazy, and c) I want to take it with me to Portland, and I’m leaving Saturday. SO, I haphazardly blocked it, and I didn’t even measure. Granted, it was after 11pm, so I just wanted to get to bed.
IN SUM, I’m hoping it fits, and I’m taking it with me to Portland to find a zipper. If I just can’t stand the way it fits, it’s going to the frog pond and will be revisited when it cools down, which means around November. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I will like it as is, though, because there are so many unexplored projects out there just waiting …

I sure hope it fits. It is just too cool looking. So what’s next? Are you going to make any of those cool patterns from those Japanese knittings mags you got a while back?

  2. ms. amy says:

Oooh… that is one adorable sweater! What kind of yarn did you use?? It’s way festive! :0) Anyhow, bravo to you, ma’am.

  3. kerrie says:

Wow – you are totally my hero! I finished my sleeve and a half ages ago and its stuck there. You’ve inspired me to pick up those needles and get on with it. You must have been knitting away really quitely on that in the background.

  5. Em says:

It looks awesome! Good enough to eat…though I’m pretty sure that’s not a good idea. Best to get some real peppermint candy. Taffy, I think.

It looks Grrreat! (sorry, eating breakfast).

  10. Jenn says:

Your sweater looks great! I don’t normally like space-dyed yarns, but the pepperminty color looks awesome. I hope it fits! Luck to you.

  11. Sandee says:

Wow! Very cute! You’re gonna look like a pink Tigger Tiger in it! Have fun in P-town!!

  12. Amy says:

I hope it fits, ‘cuz it sure is cute! That striping is so nice and symmetrical — you did a great job 🙂 Have fun in Portland — I’m heading up in early April.

  13. Rebecca says:

Love the sweater! Thanks for the tote bag pattern though you’ve started a new obsession in my life. Where do you buy your fabric online? I know you mentioned it before but I can’t remember. Thanks for all your creative patterns!

  14. Chelee says:

Love that sweater! I always have a problem with space dyed yarns not working in things I knit. Like, too much color in one spot that happens to be on one breast…or striping on one side and clumps of color on the other. Yours looks great! BTW, do you have any pictures of the felted necklace pattern that you sent to Becky? So interesting..

  15. elizabeth says:

That looks great! I can’t believe how fast you knit up the yarn from stitches west. I haven’t wound mine into balls yet! My fingers are crossed that it’ll fit. ribbing stretches, right?

  16. Kerstin says:

The striping came out so cool!! I hope it fits because it is so YOU. Fun!

  17. Silvia says:

That is adorable! I’m sooooo sad that I didn’t buy that yarn too! You TRIED to talk me into it, you knew…I sure hope it fits, but you could always reknit it in Portland as I’m sure it’s not too hot up there…

  18. Carrie says:

Ooh, Mariko, it looks great! I’m sure it will fit, and if it’s too short, hey, short cardis are in style. The yarn is yummy! You are a knitting whiz!

  19. Heidi says:

Oh wow! I love it. I have to admit when I saw the first sample of this yarn I thought it was just too weird. But your 2x2x3x1 really looks wonderful! Like everybody else I really hope it fits too, especially after doing the sleeves twice. It’s only fair!

  20. Eklectika says:

COOL! And I, too, and impressed with how nicely symmetrical the “random” patterned turned out — how neat!!! Woo-hoo!

  21. Lora says:

Oh wow! it looks great! You make me want to learn how to knit! 🙂

  22. annie says:

It is a-dor-able! Too cute. And is it just me, or was that a super quick knit? Great job. Sending fitting vibes your way 🙂

  23. Sharlene says:

Oh my goodness, it came out so cool! I. Want. That. Yarn. Uh, oh. Must. Restrain. Self. It looks absolutely fabulous though. I hope you like the fit. Hopefully there is enough wool in the blend so that you can get a little extra length out of it with blocking. Good luck and have a good trip.

  24. Ingrid says:

And now she just needs to zip it.

  25. Susan in PA says:

It’s so cute! Hope it fits!

  26. melissa says:

i am amazed with how symmetrical the striping is. that is pretty darn cool!

  27. greta says:

well gosh, if you DID have two extra arms you’d be churning out, what, like a sweater a DAY?! This is way too cute…JUST the thing to wear to Portland in search of closure…BRAVO!

  28. mikage99 says:

you are an awesome knitter.. I am a scarf knitter only (and that’s b/c i’m too lazy right now to figure out how to knit anything else). So I love coming to your site and looking at all the non-scarf things you’ve been doing. I *love* sweaters… can’t imagine being able to knit one though. 🙁 -m

  29. Erica says:

That is so so soooo cute! I love the colours – they are just perfect. Can the rest of us get the yarn too, even if we missed out on Stitches West? Please tell – what kind is it?

  30. Erica says:

Ooh, sorry, I’m a dum-dum. It’s right over there in the sidebar!

  31. alison says:

Fantastic, Mariko! Sometimes variegated yarn ends up making such yucky pools of colour, but somehow, Peppermint Candy looks just perfect. I hope it fits! Get that zipper in and model it for us, OK?

  32. I love how the sweater turned out! I am keeping my fingers crossed that the fit will be fine.

  33. Jeanine says:

    You did a fantastic job!

  34. Marie says:

LOOOOOVE your peppermint candy sweater- could you please tell me what type of yarn you used? i’d love to try it myself!
