Does anyone have a pattern for dishrags like these? My aunt in Japan made them. I asked my mother to learn how to make them when she was over there on a visit, but she learned how to make the flat, round ones rather than these double-layered jobs. It looks like it’s probably just a flat piece that is cinched together or something, but I’m not very good at figuring out such things. Anyway, they clean dishes like you wouldn’t believe!

the closest I get, would be bonbon from knitty http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring04/PATTbonbon.html but they don’t look like yours (yours look much better!)
hope you find someone who knows 🙂
Those look GREAT! Too cute. I hope the find the pattern and please share, share, share the pattern mag name. They would definitely change may tune when it came to my dreary approach to the kithen sink.
They are just super-cool! It is a pity you don’t know the pattern…they would make a great submission to knitty or something similar.
Let us know if you work out the secret.
I wonder if you could just knit a rectangle in garter stitch, alternating the two colors each row, then seam it together on the long edges to make a tube, like a penne pasta, and then run a thread through the last stitches on each end and gather them up into little circles and hide the ends in the middle when you’re done — maybe even sew the two little circles together to make the center of the dishrag very dense…
Just a thought…
What are those bad boys made of? Could you take one apart to figure it out? It would be a sacrifice, but educational
they are great…i’ve seen something almost identical to them at craft-fairs here in honolulu. i have one that is made to look like a sea urchin. are they knit or crochet? i would love to find out the pattern also.
umm, this wouldn’t result in the ridges going in the direction the pic shows *but* by knitting/crocheting a circle to a certain size and then decreasing that circle back to the center you should have something rather similar-
good luck finding the real pattern for these-
I’m sure I saw these on “Little Stitches” blog a few months ago — she said they made them from acrylic yarn, but no mention of a pattern location.
Those dish rags look great if you ever get the pattern please pass it on! 🙂
i think Gina has it, just remember to slip the first stitch of each row – i think that’ll give you the center of the rag. twist the ends/centers in opposite directions to get it to lay flat.
Try this URL…It doesn’t have the spiral pattern, but it’s got a pretty good description of the process. Cheers!

Hi Mariko,
I found an “acric tawashi” free pattern similar to yours at Japanese yarn shop’s web site.

You can see the picture here:

Thanks to Noriko’s comment and web sites, I have got it!! I will post pictures and directions on my website within the next 24 hours. (I need to sleep now, recheck the directions and make a couple more to be sure)!! Thanks for the challenge!!
By the way, we should meet sometime, I live in the San Joaquin Valley (near Merced)
Mariko (and all): Do these scrubbies have more “scrubbie power” if made with acrylic yarn? I noticed Gwen made her version (great job-btw) is in kitchen cotton, which is a good choice, but, at least for me, doesn’t dry quickly.
Kind of a dumb question, but when you say dishrag, do you mean that you use things to dry your dishes or to wash them? I’ve never knit anything for the kitchen, but might have to start now. This looks like fun! Any chance you’ve seen any quick patterns for knitted tea cozys? I’ve seen lots of crochet patterns but not many good knit ones. I’ve been trying to think about how I would knit one for my teapot?
