Some of you may recall that I attempted to knit Grace what, a couple months ago? And it was an utter failure. Neckline plunged to my navel. So sad. But you can’t keep a super eggplant down, my peeps, so I tried again! This time I did the math, and the pieces fit together. There was, however, a glitch. The neckline was still rather low. Grrrr. Yes, I could wear something underneath, but it was still pretty low, and I just wasn’t having it. As a solution, I knit a little panel and sewed it in. Yeah, it’s kind of dorky, but now I can wear the sweater by itself (well, with proper undergarments, of course). It’s very lightweight and comfy for the summer!
Yarn: Schachenmayr Princess purchased from elann. Just under 4 balls used!
Pattern: Grace from the spring 2004 Knitty

Nice Save!! I don’t think it looks dorky at all! Long time reader, first time commenter. Love the Eggplant!
I don’t think Grace looks dorky at all. I think it looks fabulous, makes me want to knit it!
NOOOT dorky, great save!
Oh! I love it! I do remember attempt #1 – I really like what you’ve done with the neckline too.
Not dorky at all. Very nice! Boy you have busy hands.
Forgot to mention that I like the purse skirt too!
i love it!! what a great idea w/ the little panel too…not dorky at all. you did a great job on it!! 🙂
Great idea! I really like the way the top looks on you.
The “little panel” is a nice design element; great job. It looks very good with that cute skirt!
Looks great. I think Bonne Marie would applaud how you bossed your knitting around. I abandonned Grace, too, because the kidsilk haze looked too transparent — I would have had to knit an entire other *shirt* to wear under it.
That panel is a great solution. Looks lovely on you.
That looks great! I looked at thephoto before reading about the insert and thought that was a great addition, so don’t diss your insert. The best part is I’ve got just under four balls of Princess left from Gigi…hmmm…
Mariko, I love your Grace! Great idea with the panel!
At least you didn’t fall from Grace. 🙂 Looks great and I LOVE creative solutions such as the panel you sewed in. More supereggplant power to you!
I think it looks great! I didn’t even notice the panel until you mentioned it — it really works with the rest of the design. Not dorky!
Great look! Love the way you altered it. Great idea.
Your “Grace” does NOT look dorky! I think it looks great! My mom used to sew many such a ‘panel’ in my clothes in high school, if she thought it was too revealing!Ahh, nostalgia!
Anyway, seeing your “Grace” now has me wanting to make one, but probably it will be for my daughter………I enjoy reading your blog…don’t remember how I got here, but you have many of the same interests as I….knitting, sewing, and candy, haha!
Very nice – definitely not dorkolicious at all!
You’re lookin’ good! You inspire me to finish my own grace.
Very clever fashion solution to the plunging neckline! It looks great on you too.
Watch out. You’ll be starting a trend…the SuperEggplant Squared-Off V Neck.
Wow, a great solution Mariko! I never really cared for the pattern as shown at Knitty with that silly t-shirt haning out, but I really like your version enough to take a second look at knitting it myself.
I’ll echo susan — love the Eggplant. That’s perfect on you, doll, and the fabric panel is inspired.
Is it annoying when you have so many people saying the same thing? I’m guessing no, when it’s a compliment – so GREAT JOB, very clever and resourceful of you to fix it to your liking.

Wowsa, what a great color, and a great solution to a low neckline! When mine turn out too low, I just wear them to wait tables…helps increase the tips. 🙂
Hi I love your grace, it looks fab and did you sew your skirt you are wearing? If so where did you buy the fabric?, I love it!
I just wanted to say that I love your version of Grace! I’m planning on knitting it up with the same yarn, so it’s great to have your FO as visual proof that it can work! (And the center panel was indeed a great idea.)
