red, red wine … vinegar!

In January I learned how to make red wine vinegar. Basically, you need red wine, a mother (a gelatinous, placenta-like glob that the wine feeds off of or vice versa, I can’t remember), and a large container. Today I bottled my very first batch! It’s been sitting in the corner of a cupboard for 9 months. Here’s what it looked like:

The mother grew A LOT. It’s kind of scary. Here’s the mother:

And the results of my labors (yeah, I know, one and a half measly bottles! But please note the lovely LABELS. Hee hee):

Dude, that’s one scary looking mother! I won’t even ask what that started out as…red wine vinegar, interesting concept. I just never EVER had wine leftover…burp…

I’m sure that vinegar is some good stuff! I would love to make my own but I’m not sure I could get over the look of the “mother”. It really does look like placenta (yum-yum).

wow! What a great idea to make vinegar in a sun tea jar. I’ve always wanted to try it, but haven’t yet.

That vinager looks decadent! What are you going to use it on (or in)?

Where did the mother come from? I would like to give this a try-even if it does remind me of “The Blob”.
