My brother is in Boston right now. The dude never goes anywhere, so it’s great he is finally traveling, even if it is for work. If any of you have any Boston suggestions for him, please let me or him know.
These Mike & Ike candies are really good, and they prove (to me, anyway) that not all jellybeans are created equal:
I ordered some of these mini oven mitts from Miles Kimball.
Recently we’ve been watching episodes of Big Love on HBO. It’s kind of creeping me out. My main question, though, is if Bill Paxton is going to run around in his underwear, why can’t they be boxers? Those tighty whities just aren’t doing it.
ah boston! is he going to do tourist things? i would have to recommend faneuil hall area because it’s tourist central, but he might enjoy the north end (italian area) to walk around in. or newbury street or the common or the public garden.
those oven mitts are the cutest!
i know you live in the NW, but do you live in portland OR? i might be moving there and wanted to know what you thought of it.
those mini mitts are funny – you would think they were a Japanese invention! I’m with your mother on the baking in the toaster oven – actually it’s the only option I have. And I’m with you on the Big Love thing. ps I don’t know if New Haven Conneticut is anywhwere near Boston but I recently watched an Oprah episode where they discussed the ’20 hamburgers you should eat before you die’. And the hamburger at number 20 from Louis’ Lunch New Haven, CT looked very delicious.
Have him bring back some cannoli & upside-down tiramisu from Mike’s Pastry in the North End for you. 🙂
ooh, Mike & Ike! I haven’t had them in forever. I totally gave them up when I decided to do something about my weight. The one candy that I could finish a half pound box in about half an hour. Like crack, I tell you.
those mitts are too small even for your wee little hands. that’s nuts.
too funny, i would never call mike & ike’s jellybeans. they are a completely different thing to me. 🙂
Tangy Mike and Ikes!!! Must have them!!!
PS – I meant to mention a site to you with incredible, so good whoopie pies – wickedwhoopies.com TO DIE FOR!!!
Tell your brother to take the “T” to downtown and just walk! Or there is always the tour of FENWAY!!!!!!!!! So much to do in Boston! They have a COACH store but I bet he won’t find that as exciting as I do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Arrggggggghhhhh! Now I feel justified in deciding not to watch Big Love (Bill Paxton, tighty whities: ick). As for Boston, the city of my birth: the T, Fenway (even if he’s not a baseball fan, why pass up the opportunity to visit a beautiful old wooden stadium that does not have a corporate name?), Dunkin Donuts, jimmies on soft serve, brown bread in a can (oh, wait, I’m offering tips as if it were a Super Eggplant trip. Oops.
If you’re watching Big Love, read Krakauer’s (sp?) Under the Banner of Heaven for interesting and disturbing history that encompasses polygamy. I quite enjoyed the book, and when people at the gym asked me what I was reading and I replied “its a book about Mormonism” they usually RAN away thinking I was out to convert! Cracked me up.
Have you had Jelly Belly Sours? They are a m a z i n g !
Mostly, for some reason, I feel a need to respond to the responders.
1. Carolyn, I have to agree with you. Mike and Ikes aren’t jelly beans. They are a different, but equally good beastie.
2. Hi Reese! My husband and I just moved to Portland about a month ago. So far, so good. And I’d be happy to confab with you about it.
3. This is for Mariko, the Cupcake Queen. I found this thread they way I seem to find things on the Internet, by clicking links to links to links. Anyway – Cupcakes: Satan’s Tool.

(Sorry the address is such an ugly mess to cut and paste!)
Definitely tell your brother to check out Harvard Square for good shopping & eats. Especially Mr. Bartley’s Burgers & Herrell’s ice cream. Great chocolate can be found at Burdicks on Brattle St & great pizza at Cambridge 1 on Church St.
definitely the north end. At Modern bakery, he can get freshly filled cannolis for himself and the best torrone for you!
