Remember Penguin shirts? Well, apparently the penguin is back and in much finer form under the label Original Penguin by Munsingwear. I fell in love with a couple of skirts.
The one on the left is ON SALE for $165! That is just crazy expensive. I decided to use the skirts as inspiration and make my own.
What folly! I couldn’t do the V-yoke or those cute little scallop dealies. Oh well, mine didn’t cost $165. I used for the centerpiece a little piece of Liberty of London fabric that
Anna sent me a while back. I then went to
Fabric Depot and spaced out for a really long time trying to find complementary fabrics. I didn’t find exactly what I was looking for, but you know how that can be. So anyway, the reason I call it the garbage skirt is because the woman who cut the fabric for me asked me what I was going to make, and I said a tiered skirt with some stuff on it, and she proceeded to tell me that she loves to make skirts with all kinds of fabrics and stick a bunch of lace on them. She calls them her garbage skirts, I’m assuming because she uses all remnants. I thought that was great.
Okay, I’d better get back to sewing. My in-laws arrive tomorrow, so I need to get in some last-minute sewing! I might eat some ice cream first, though.
I like yours WAY better!
That is fabulous! And I agree with Stacie, yours is way better!
I’ll pay you 165$ for a garbage skirt…why aren’t you my personal designer??
Oh, I love your garbage skirt…very cute! I love those ladies at FDepot…so nice and chatty!
That is so cute! I totally want to make one too!
I love that. And I agree, yours is better.
You could seriously make this a FT job!
That skirt is awesome!
Love the skirt! I can’t believe how much the Penguin clothing costs. I tried to find it cheaper on ebay but the seller flaked out on me and never sent me the skirt. Guess I’ll have to make my own now. 😉
I love, love, love the way yours turned out! It’s so cute and so unique, and what a perfect way to use up scraps…hmmm. Very inspiring!
Now you’re just showing off 😉
That is seriously adorable. Love it!
I love that too! I like the way that you trimmed it. I think one is ric-rac? Or are they really slim lines of a complimentary fabric? Very nice.
What a great idea!
Wow – how fun! Your skirts are always so much fun. I love that the fabric has meaning for you. Wear it well. Just don’t wear it to take out the garbage. That would be a shame.
Very cute! I love when people knock off RTW clothes for a fraction of the cost! I also have to say that I like the colors in yours better was well.
I’m a huge lurker on your blog. I had to come out to tell you how great this skirt is. I’m going to try to knock off your knock off.
This just shows you how much of a treasure garbage can be. Cute skirt!
You know what, sweetheart? I like yours better than the actual Penguin skirts. It turned out great.
Personally I prefer just about anything handmade to mass-produced items, regardless of whether they cost $164 or not – and this is no exception. I love the garbage skirt!
Faaaabulous, you are!
oh gall, now i know what you mean about the penguin thing. those are sweet. may have to look into a fall option. much more flattering than that gathered tiered hippy nonesense.
That’s some cool garbage!
This is really cool!
That skirt is awesome! I like it better than the $165 one too.
$165???
It’s nice but not that nice! Yours is much nicer.
Your skirt is a million times cuter! I want 🙂
I love the colors of your skirt!
These skirts are all lovely, but I agree with the others – I like yours best! makes me feel like breaking out the scraps and the sewing machine….
