So I’m in my superbuzzy work area (okay, so it’s the basement), packing up orders, and I get to thinking about long-lasting lip glosses and the like. We haven’t had one of our beauty roundtables in quite some time, so hey, how about we talk about these long-wearing lip things? Yesterday I thought I’d experiment and bought a Maybelline one, but the color I got turned out to be too light and frosty for me, and dang if that stuff doesn’t completely dry out my lips! So, which, if any, do you recommend and why?

I don’t really do the long-wear colors so much as stains. As far as stains go, Benefit’s Benetint is pretty much the cat’s pajamas.
As far as drugstore varieties, I’ve had much better luck with Max Factor than Maybelline. I hope to try a stain at some point, but haven’t made it to Sephora lately.
Moose Smooch, made in Maine by MadGabs it is my absolute favourite lip balm ever. Olive oil, beeswax that kind of thing. Comes in all natural flavours and doesn’t feel sticky or gloopy and is long lasting.
It first came my way in a race treat bag a few years ago and I wouldn’t want to be with out it.
Sort of hard for me to find in Canada (sigh) and the company doesn’t sell direct to my country either.
I would love to try out their skin balm.
Have had pretty good luck with Burt’s Bees tinted lip balm, I’m not crazy about the minty tingly feel of it at first but other wise it feels nice and does a good job and the tint seems to work okay.
This has been my quest for many years now…
Clinique makes good lip balm/lip glosses that tend to last until you eat. Some think they are sticky though. Lancome makes good lip gloss that smells nice, but that is subjective. I like the feel of Lancome.
I do like Stila and Sephora too…
can you tell Im addicted to lip gloss?
I really love Neutrogena’s tinted lip balms (they feel great and the colors are very natural), but they’re not particularly long-lasting. And I like the Burt’s Bees tinted lip balms too; they’re a bit thicker and stickier than the Neutrogena ones so they last longer. For the really long-lasting stuff I recently bought some Revlon colorstay, and it lasts for a long time but doesn’t dry me out.
i heart stains… lorac’s ‘sheer luck’ is so good. but as a regular gloss goes, i think victoria’s secret & lola beauty are the longest-wearing ones i have (though mac wears well, it is *so sticky* and with longer hair, not good.) hmm… i’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about this, i see 🙂
I have fallen in love with the Maybelline. Perhaps just because the first one I bought happen to be the *perfect* color for me — Sienna. I do still use lip liner across my entire lip and I find that reduces the drying out. But, I also live in a dry climate so I use chapstick pretty liberally.
I really like Burt’s Bees tinted lip balms too — they look really natural. But as someone noted previously, they are not exactly long-lasting.
I agree about the stains. It gives you color without having to worry about reapplying. Just add some lip gloss throughout the day and you’ll feel put together, but not overly made up!
I think I have some sort of body chemistry thing going where no matter what I use, it all just evaporates, so I’m resigned to having to reapply it. Gives me the opportunity to whip out the compact and look 1940s.
I use Aveda products, lipliner plus gloss. It’s not as long lasting as a stain but the liner helps it last. Plus it isn’t made of any nasty ingredients that I wouldn’t want to be eating and they have allergy-friendly lists, and the colors are nice.
I use either MAC lip glass (lasts, but it’s a bit sticky) or Aveda lipshine (I like the cinnamon smell). I have chronically dry lips for whatever reason, and both seem to do the job for me. If the dryness gets real bad I use Badger lip balm in Ginger lemon, cuz it has olive oil in it.
My current favorite is CO Bigelow Cinnamint Mentha Lip Shine. It is glossy, yummy, moisturizing and fairly long lasting (although I’m the type that forgets to look to see if product is still around later in the day). IIRC they make tinted versions too.
My all time favourite is the CO Bigelow Mentha Lip Tints from bath and body works, Enhances your lip color, minty fresh taste and smells great.

Too bad they don’t have this in canada? Also you can buy 3 lip tints for 15 bucks. that’s a steal!
I use the Cover Girl long-last (blue tubes, packaged in a silver box). It took a few tries to get the right color(#633 if you’re wondering), but once I did I’ve never looked back!
It does tend to dry out by the end of the day– but my days are of the 14-hour variety… it certainly lasts through my 9-hour workday with no problems.
I highly recommend using an exfoliator for the lips nightly to remove all traces (Body Shop used to carry a good one), and that helps with the flaky-lip syndrome.
One last tidbit– I don’t use the gloss that comes with the color; I apply the color, wait 5 minutes, then top with Burt’s Bees lipbalm.
Costco has a line of cosmetics by Borghese…and their lip gloss is shiny, long-lasting, and doesn’t dry your lips out. The colors are nice and sheer, so you can wear them alone or over lip-pencil or lipstick. I tried one in desperation for an interview that turned into a four hour marathon, and when I looked at myself in my car’s rear-view mirror as I was leaving, the gloss still looked new. I am very impressed with the stuff.
I also do the burt’s bees tinted lipgloss/chapstick thing. I am a big hippie. they don’t last long, I agree, but don’t feel gross at all, which is more important to me. . .
Shiseido used to make nice lip gloss. I don’t know about their present line of products. I don’t like glosses that are sticky and heavy or feel like coloured petroleum jelly.
I’m a sucker for your beauty roundtables. I must also vote for CO Bigelow at Bath and Bodyworks. The last time I checked they had yummy flavors like creamsicle and rootbeer that I prefer to the minty ones. Very shiny and moisturizing and yummy to boot.
With a baby and preschooler, I don’t have much time-but everyday I apply MAC pro longwear lipcolour. The stain is on one side of the wand(my fave is the pinky-brown “For Keeps” color)and the clear, non-sticky gloss is on the other end of the wand. Also, check out http://www.ewg.org for low-toxicity cosmetics…MAC has quite a few products that don’t have questionable chemicals in them.

I like the bodyshop lip gloss called high-shine lip treatment. I find it lasts a nice long time, tastes and smells nice, and comes in some nice colours. And they’re definitely moisturizing.
Firstly–I LOVE MY SUPERBUZZY ORDER!! It is by far the coolest fabric in my newbie stash, and it makes me very happy. Keep up the great work!
I have an aversion to gross-feeling glosses and I also feel cheated if they dry out my lips (defeats the purpose!) I end up using Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm (meant for men, but great for ladies–smooth and full of shea butter, avocado oil and mint). If I want color I’ll put on a lipstick, blot most of it off and top it with Rosebud Salve, which also comes in a semi-fake Strawberry variety. It’s pinky and not sticky, and the tin is mega-kawaii!
shiseido has THE BEST lipgloss…i’ve used their chianti rose for over 5 years now…it lasts forever (on lips and the tube seems to have an unending supply – only on my second tube in 5 years!); doesn’t dry lips out; isn’t sticky; the color is flattering on all skin tones and shiseido is japanese to boot! love it.
i actually made lip balm from the martha stewart website and i really like it. it’s made with unbleached beeswax, veg oil and you add whatever essential oil you want to scent it (i have currently tried orange and bezoin-like vanilla and very good for dry skin). i wouldn’t add the honey called for in her recipe, it stays all globby at the bottom and doesn’t melt into the balm very well. you can also add some lipstick you already have to get a nice shiny gloss/balm with a hint of colour to it. i put mine in empty lip balm tubes i bought at a herbal healing store. and if you have dry lips, save your cash on fancy exfoliants and use your tooth brush to scrub your lips when brushing. only takes a few seconds and it totally works!
Gotta be Philosophy Kiss Kiss Kiss. Great colors, no gummy feeling and a nice pepermint taste/tingle when you apply. They too have a lip exfoliator and it makes your lips nice and smooth. I got these two as a set.
p.s. I LOVE and am addicted to all Philosophy skincare too. The scrubs and peels make my tanned-too-much-as-a-teenage-before-I-knew-what-it-would-mean-at-40 skin feel soooo smooth.
I always love to chime in when the subject turns to beauty products, as I’ve loved them even longer than I’ve loved yarn!
This winter has been a particularly rough one for my skin in general and lips in particular. I also have been using Burt’s Bees tinted lipgloss in Rhubarb. It’s minty AND a subtle color–the best thing I like to put on when going without makeup. My old standby for lip color is Mary Kay Signature Lipstick in Apple Berry–maybe not PC, but it lasts pretty well with only one touch-up needed.
Oh, I have to say, I caved after reading all about this C.O. Bigelow. I cannot stand Bath and Body Works but I dashed in a grabbed three for $15–very pleased!
I just bought a lip stain by Urban Decay (color Envy) that starts out semi-glossy (depending on the number of layers). It goes on as a gel type gloss which quickly soaks in and becomes a long wearing stain. It doesn’t come off on cups/straws and lasts through eating.
I’m a little slow posting, but wanted to chime in and tell Leslie – “You’re right”. The covergirl outlast products are amazing. They actually last 24 hours, but look a little ragged after 16 hours. The base coat is like paint and lasts like paint. It is so lasting, you need to be careful applying it. If you make a mistake, fix it fast or you will have a hard time removing it.
I find that because this product is so strong, it does not dry my lips out like a lot of lipsticks do. It does not moisturize my lips at all, but seems to do a good job of holding in the moisture.
There is a problem, and while it is a big one, shopping at Rite-Aid, with their satisfaction gurantee on cosmetics helps. The color samples and the actual product seen through the container really do not reflect the real color. I have never had this problem to this extent and find that even with some experience, I choose only 1 hit for every 2 misses.
I also like Rimmel’s Lip Vinyl, it feels good and lasts at least through a meal and is really inexpensive. Cosmic is a great color that I get lots of compliments on and I like Veloctiy too.
I used to want my lipgloss to last forever — and I used the Covergirl Outlast at my wedding, and I never had to reapply once, all through the morning, afternoon and evening! But now I prefer a shorter-term commitment, and moisturization is my main goal. I like the Burt’s Bees line, too, and the Benetint is also wonderful under your favorite chapstick stuff, like Lip Medex (mine).
I’m a huge fan of Clinique’s Almost Lipstick, especially the Black Honey color (don’t be scared by how dark the stick looks, it’s a light berry color). I wouldn’t say it lasts forever, but it doesn’t dry my lips out the way most lipsticks do. I know a lot of people use it on their cheeks too.
