A peepin’ good brownie

IMG_1344_1024x682.jpg
I like marshmallows. Many people, I think, like the idea of marshmallows, but they don’t actually like to eat them. “Too sweet” is the frequent complaint. But when you pair the marshmallow with graham crackers and chocolate, what’s not to love? I discovered this recipe for S’mores Brownies on Joy the Baker’s blog, and it sounded quite yummy.
The recipe calls for putting large marshmallows on top, but hey, I just happened to have some Peeps and mini marshmallows, so I thought I’d try that instead. But alas, poor Peeps:
IMG_1345_1024x682.jpg
I’m MELTING. Ha ha. Poor Peeps have been reduced to teeny teat-like blobs.
The brownies came out cakier than I had expected (though actually, I had no expectations at all, so I don’t know what I am talking about):

After the brownies cooled completely, though, they were less cakey and more flavorful, so yes, you should wait to try them until they are completely cooled. Now, Joy the Baker suggests adding marshmallows to the batter itself, and I did not do this. Next time I will, as I think it might give the brownies a chewier texture. There are also crushed graham crackers in the batter, which is kind of awesome, but I don’t think there was enough, so maybe I will add more next time? I don’t know.

join the pack

It’s the return of the amineko! Actually, it’s a bit of a sad story. Thuy went on a bit of an amineko crocheting bender about, oh, 5 years ago, and she sent me a couple of unassembled amineko to animate. Well, the production line got a little stopped up, obviously, because it has taken me that 5 years to finally put these little guys together. The new amineko are the two in the center (Thuy thinks the turquoise one looks like my brother).
IMG_1337_512x768.jpg
Here are the new guys. I have to say I haven’t tired of these amineko. They are so darn cute! Now I kind of want a whole houseful of them, but I think I have forgotten how to crochet them. Oops.

mascara

IMG_1223_1024x682.jpg

Once upon a time I promised to discuss my experience with Japanese mascaras. I am finally doing it. This post will most likely only interest those of you with short, straight, sparse eyelashes, or perhaps it will not interest anyone. Ha!
Anyway, I have never been a mascara wearer. It always irritated my eyes, and I never felt like it did much to enhance my eyes or anything. When the tube mascaras such as Fiberwig and Blinc Kiss Me came out, though, I became curious. The tube mascaras are waterproof yet easy to remove. You just wet your lashes, rub them between your fingertips, and SLIDE off the little “tubes” of mascara that have formed around your lashes.
IMG_1234_1024x682.jpg

SO, last year when I went to Japan, I picked up a couple mascaras to try. The red tube is Opera MyLash and the cute floral tube is a limited edition of Fiberwig. My preference, hands down, is the Opera MyLash. As you can see in the photo above, the Opera MyLash has the smaller brush, which is much better when you barely have any lashes at all. The fat Fiberwig brush was essentially too large for my lashes, and I couldn’t maneuver it to get much coverage on my sad stubby lashes. I also tend to be somewhat uncoordinated and prone to stabbing myself in the eye or elsewhere with the mascara wand. It is much easier to control the Opera MyLash wand if you have similar issues.
IMG_1224_1024x682.jpg

Okay, so the third and very critical piece is the tube on the very top in the first photo. It is a battery operated, heated eyelash curler! NO JOKE! And it is like magic! Again, if you have short, straight lashes, it is really difficult to use one of those manual eyelash curlers. I tend to clamp my eyelid into it, and that is rather painful. Also, those curlers don’t really work that well for the stubborn Asian lashes. I have found that if I apply mascara then use the heated curler, my eyelashes actually curl! I don’t know if it is that noticeable to anyone, and really, who is getting that close to my face to notice, but it is really fun. Panasonic Heated Eyelash Curler is like the one I have.
I have a couple other mascaras “in reserve” that I am going to try, but so far my favorite is Opera MyLash. I have been pretty lazy about putting on mascara lately, but maybe it’s time to start up again. If you have any suggestions or questions, please let me know!

it’s all about cake

IMG_1323_512x768.jpg

It’s my brother‘s birthday today (the 12th. I should point that out in case I don’t post for a month or something). He is 16 months older than me, but lately people seem to think he is my younger brother. I choose to believe that is because he is more immature than I am rather than him looking more youthful.
The cake recipe is from Smitten Kitchen, and it is a keeper. I made it last summer and have not stopped thinking about it since. It’s a yellow cake with chocolate sour cream frosting.
P.S. See that flowery piece of fabric under the window? That is Deedle’s new diaper (or “seasonal panties” if you prefer) from Doodlebugduds. She has started having vestibular episodes, which freak her out and cause her to wet herself. At least now she has a cute diaper.

kryptonite

IMG_1315_1024x682.jpg
If I were a reasonable person, I would recognize I have a problem and unsubscribe from the JetPens e-mail newsletter. Every time that thing lands in my inbox, I am enticed by the images of sleek new office supplies, and next thing you know, I’ve got more pens coming to me.
IMG_1316_1024x682.jpg
But, you know, these are things I NEED, right? I really did need a compass, because we use them in patternmaking class. Another eraser? Well, this one is slender (it’s even called “Slendy”) so that I can get to those hard-to-reach pencil marks. See? Completely acceptable. And the Uni-ball Jetstream Color Ink Ballpoint Pen? Hey, I only needed another small purchase to qualify for free shipping!
IMG_1317_1024x682.jpg
And speaking of the Uni-ball Jetstream Color Ink Series Ballpoint Pens, can I just point out how wonderful they are? The Uni-ball Jetstream ballpoint pens have, as some of you know, changed my view of ballpoint pens. I love them. They are so smooth and just glide over paper that I could spend all day and all night just doodling scribbles. My favorite size is the 0.7, which is, to me, the perfect balance–not too thin and not too fat. The Color Ink pens are only offered in the 0.5 size. I wasn’t terribly concerned, but I did hesitate for a minute. I needn’t have worried, though, because the 0.5 point is perfect for these colored pens. They are smooth and sharp! I now have three colors, and someone help me, because I think I might have to get the remaining colors one of these days.

oh so clever

IMG_1314_1024x682.jpg

Look! No, your eyes are not playing tricks on you. There is indeed liquid in that coffee filter, and no, it’s not leaking all over the counter. How can that be? Well, it’s because I am using a Clever Coffee Dripper, and it is indeed clever.
I seem to collect coffee-making gadgets, and when I read about this one, I had to give it a try. It’s a lot like your regular filtercone dripper except it allows the coffee grounds to steep via some magical, patented drip mechanism that only drips out your coffee when you have the filter over a mug. I wasn’t expecting a huge difference in taste, but I have to say I was pretty surprised by how smooth and delicious the resulting cup was!
I ordered my Clever Coffee Dripper from ZombieRunner, which is an awesome store because they sell a winning combination of coffee and running gear. They also frequently run free shipping specials. You can also get the Clever Coffee Dripper from Sweet Maria’s, which also has a TON of information about the ins and outs of using the dripper. I suffered from a bit of information overload from the videos, but they are helpful. In the end, I didn’t weigh my grounds or change the grind or anything, and I still got great coffee, so don’t be scared!

look away, lulu

IMG_1309_512x768.jpg

I got a top by an undisclosed brand and liked it enough to attempt to rip off the design. It has a lot of serged seams and such, so I thought it might be fun to try to duplicate. The shirt came together pretty easily, though the interior seams aren’t too tidy (I have problems with details). The fabric was in my stash and is a not terribly stretchy cotton knit. I pounded in some pearlescent snaps for the closures. I’m going to give this to my friend Lulu for her upcoming birthday. I think she will be able to rock the skinny shirt look and the lemon yellow stripes. Just in case she is not crazy about it, I’ll probably throw in a lipstick or something, too!

Compost Cookies

IMG_1305_1024x682.jpg
I saw these Momofuku Milk Bar Compost Cookies online somewhere, and seriously, any cookie that contains chocolate chunks as well as salty snack foods is a winner in my book. I can’t seem to locate where I originally found the recipe, but you can find the recipe along with detailed instructions (and funny commentary) on the Amateur Gourmet’s site here.
The fun thing about these cookies is you throw in a cup and a half of cookie add-ins, like chocolate chips, rice krispies, what have you. I went with some rice krispies, some chocolate chips, four individual Reese’s peanut butter cups, and a Snickers bar. I think next time I would increase the Snicker component as well as the chocolate chips. The recipe also calls for a cup and a half of snack foods, as in chips and pretzels and such. Here’s what I went with:
IMG_1302_1024x682.jpg
I had hoped to use Ruffles, but they didn’t have any plain Ruffles at the 7-11 I went to. I was also going to include Combos, because, you know, Combos are so awesome, but I wasn’t crazy about the selection. Next time? Ruffles and maybe goldfish.
I think the butter I used was not very fresh. My cookies came out really flat (my cookies have been doing that lately, even with fresh baking powder and soda and such). The cookies are still tasty and chewy, but not, in my opinion, death-defyingly delicious like the New York Times chocolate chip cookies (which we have renamed the M.F. Cookies, and I will let you guess what those initials stand for). I will still make them again, though, because I believe there is room enough in this universe for unlimited cookie recipes.

pulling the wool over my eyes

IMG_1298_512x768.jpg
Yo! I’m back! Well, for now. I got this washable wool jersey at Rose City Textiles here in Portland. It’s pretty luscious stuff–stretchy and warm with a good amount of heft.
I often have a tough time deciding what to make with fabrics I really like, because I don’t want to mess anything up. For this fabric, though, I knew a long-sleeve top was in order. I had made a top from this awesome Korean craft book a while back and liked it, so I opted for a long-sleeve version. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out, and it is very comfy. Of course, it’s 70 degrees today, and I am still a little cold with the one layer on, but what can you do.

let them eat … cake!

IMG_1294_1024x682.jpg
It was my mother’s birthday on Saturday, so I figured a cake was in order. I made a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, and it was pretty tasty. Peter refused to try it, claiming that the 2 tablespoons of cocoa in the ENTIRE recipe would keep him up. Right.
Anyway, the recipe I used is one I’ve had for a number of years. I found it online, and it apparently hails from the Buttercup Bakery, but that’s all I know. The result is very fluffy and light, kind of like a box cake! The recipe makes great cupcakes, too.
*See the napkin in the photo? Yes, we used napkins from Subway, because we are classy like that.
Read on for the recipe, yo!
