Sun Break

Bandelier National Monument, originally uploaded by super eggplant.

Hi, and sorry for the absence. We spent last week (spring break, woohoo!) in New Mexico. We drove all over the state and took in many sights. It was really nice to be in the sun and eat a lot of New Mexican cuisine.

Other than that, I’ve got nothing. I leave for Japan in a week (!!). I’ll be sans e-mail and Internet access for 2.5 weeks!

how bebleshy you look

bbcream.jpg
In keeping with the whole Japanese skincare revolution thing, I am now all about the BB Cream. It was actually Freecia who told me about it and sent me reeling into a new obsession. BB Cream (Blemish Balm Cream) is some magical elixir that is basically a tinted moisturizer. It also has sunscreen and whitening and anti-wrinkle properties (supposedly). The Koreans seem to be the hardcore BB Cream freaks, and boy are there a lot of choices! I did some basic research, and you can find plenty of reviews online (this Asian beauty blog is one of my favorites–very detailed posts!).
I finally ended up getting the Skin79 Super Plus Beblesh Balm mostly because, okay, I liked the packaging! I couldn’t resist the hot pink pump action container. I got it on ebay from seller “skinfood2you” whose ebay shop you can find here. Shipping was only $3.50 or something, and I got my BB Cream in about a week! Woohoo! I paid about $18 for the lotion plus shipping, which is cheaper than many moisturizers, especially ones that are supposed to change your whole face. Anyway, I really like this BB Cream. It’s lightly scented, and the odor goes away very quickly. It blends into the skin smoothly and leaves my face dry (as opposed to greasy and heavy). If you’re super fair skinned, I’d be cautious, but if you have some pigment, I say go for it! Oh, if you are all about the natural, organic ingredients, you might want to steer clear. There are all kinds of crazy ingredients in the BB Cream. I was too scared to look any of them up on the Skin Deep cosmetic database.
Oh, before I forget, I have to share some of the “instructions” on the box:
“This product has excellent cover function by composition of make-up base and foundation. It can correct your irregularly different skin tones naturally. A thte same time by use of fine and soft texture porosity powder is excellent for your skin adhesion and sebum control.
This is W/S shape which is good for skin affinity and it make your skin light, soft and dry all day without that skin gooey.
DIRECTIONS: Use it proper quantity on the area of your face like patting at the last step of skin care.”

We have a winner!

Hi! THANKS, everyone, for playing along. I used the Random Number Generator to select our winner. Blogless Janis is the winner, and I have sent her an e-mail letting her know!
I would have picked the winner earlier, but I was knocked down by the flu. Thank goodness I had the foresight to make a batch of Jell-O before things really got ugly.
Anyway, thanks for playing, and I hope to have another book giveaway soon (I’ll give you a hint–it has to do with buttons).

Rainbow Cake

rainbow cake action.jpg
A friend of mine just told me I needed to blog about this rainbow cake right away, since she was sick of looking at Deedle’s teeth. I believe the words “gross” and “disgusting” were bandied about. So, here you go, no more wretched, rotten teeth! Now you have a beautiful rainbow cake!
I read about this particular rainbow cake last week and haven’t really been able to stop thinking about it. It is sooo beautiful! I knew I had to make one. It uses cake mix and other chemical-laden products, but sometimes I like to live on the edge! The recipe uses sugar-free products, but I mixed it up (I used regular Jell-O instant pudding for the frosting, for example, and I used regular ginger ale in the cake mix). You know, the cake wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. In fact, that was the general consensus among the dinner guests, though Peter wouldn’t even try it (he found the colors too disturbing), and our friend Jason took one bite then proclaimed he preferred the cake mix with eggs and oil. He then went to his basement and started banging on water pipes. I guess you had to be there or know Jason.

I think this cake is super festive, but I like colored foods. I would totally make this again, though if I did use the method where you simply add soda pop to the cake mix, I would be sure to put a parchment layer in the cake pans, something I was too lazy to do this time and which resulted in cake stickage. I found that using soda instead of eggs and oil turned out a denser, rather than fluffier, cake. It wasn’t super dense like cornbread or anything, but it wasn’t light and airy like most cake mixes. I liked the density myself. I would type up the recipe here, but I am too lazy, plus I have to go fold laundry now before Heroes comes on, so you’ll just have to visit the original recipe, which is here. Enjoy!

Deedle’s rotten teeth

Deedle’s rotten teeth, originally uploaded by super eggplant.

On Friday we took Deedle in to get her teeth cleaned. We had had them cleaned a few years ago, and really, it’s something we should do yearly, but last time it cost us almost $900, so, you know, sometimes I kinda forget to make the appointment.

I do try to brush Deedle’s teeth, but she moves her head all around, and it is quite difficult, so I am lazy about it. After this latest teeth cleaning, though, I am determined to brush regularly. Why? Deedle had to have 7 teeth extracted! Some of her teeth were so rotten they were on the verge of falling out of her mouth. No wonder her breath is so horrible. She had come to us with bad teeth to begin with–she had been chained up in the backyard for weekends at a time with a big bowl of food and water that she probably went through the first day, so I suspect she tried to chew through the chain.

But, the moral to the story is, if you have pets, take care of their teeth! I just found out about a product called PetzLife. It comes in gel and spray form and is supposed to be very effective at reducing plaque. The vet did emphasize that you really DO need to brush, though, so that’s what I will do. Really.

Oh, yeah!

Oh, yeah!, originally uploaded by super eggplant.

I love this whole “blog from flickr” deal! Anyway, Peeps are in season once again, so there’s not much to be sad about, is there? I was a bit sad over the weekend because my computer got infected with MALWARE, and I could not get rid of it. In all these years of surfing the wild wild web, I had never caught malicious malware before, so this was rather unsettling. I cannot say enough good things about the folks at bleeping computer. They provided step-by-step instructions on how to fix my computer!

My first attempt with the lotion mask

Somewhere in Japan, Chizu Saeki is laughing really hard.

Anyway, in Saeki’s The Japanese Skincare Revolution, she says the lotion mask is one of the best things for your skin. She suggests the Miss Webril cotton pads, but I couldn’t find any. For the lotion, I decided to go ahead and buy the one pictured in the book: Nars Hydrating Freshening Lotion (I got it from beauty.com at 20 percent off through some drugstore.com promotion). She says to add a quarter-size amount of the lotion to the pad, but the pad seemed to soak it up really quickly. I’ll keep trying this for a while, but I don’t have a ton of patience, so we’ll see what happens.

my, how yellow you look today

IMG_0709_512x768.jpg
I used to have decent skin when I was younger, but I never took care of it, and I always took it for granted. Now I am middle aged and have brown splotches all over my puss. I am not that bothered about it, but I do like the idea of having decent skin. So, when I read about Japanese beauty guru Chizu Saeki and her book The Japanese Skincare Revolution, into my amazon shopping cart it went.
The book is essentially a skincare manual. She has all sorts of tips and techniques in there, including massages for your face and lymph massages. Some of the tricks include putting honey on your lips then sticking a little piece of plastic wrap over them to remedy chapped, dry lips; giving your skin a break by avoiding cleansers, moisturizers, anything, one day per week; and keeping cold, wet towels in the fridge to cool down your face after a day in the hot sun.
IMG_0710_1024x682.jpg
She is also a big advocate of the “lotion mask,” which will make you look like Jason from Friday the 13th, but if it makes your skin look good, who cares! The lotion mask seems a bit involved, but I’m going to give it a try. Now, here’s the thing–facial lotions are very common in Japan, but they are pretty much unheard of here in the US. Here we like to use toners and then moisturizers, but lotions are NOT toners. I tried finding some low-cost alternatives to the one lotion the book shows (NARS Hydrating Freshening Lotion), but so far I have been unsuccessful. The thing is, lotions are usually clear or slightly milky, and they are kind of runny, but most bottles are opaque, so it’s impossible to tell if it’s the correct type of lotion. If anyone has any suggestions out there, please holler; in the meantime, I’ll keep searching.
Honestly, there are so many technique in this book, including a very involved set of steps for cleansing your face, that I feel like I need a giant, laminated sheet of instructions to stick on the bathroom walls!

Craving peanut butter

IMG_0694_1024x682.jpg
It might be in bad taste to have a post about peanut butter rice krispie treats, what with the current salmonella contamination of so many peanut-based goodies, but really, you can look at this as a public service announcement. Most big-brand peanut butters are NOT on the recall list, so if you go out and get a jar of Skippy (which is what I use for baking), you can have your peanut butter sweets and not get sick!
I saw these Peanut Butter Krispy Bars on several food blogs and HAD to make them. They are basically candied rice krispie treats with a layer of peanut buttery goodness and a chocolate topping. Yum, right? They are very, very rich, but I think I would make a few adjustments next time. I actually am a big fan of rice krispie treats, and I think these would benefit from having MORE of the rice krispie treat. With the current recipe, the rice krispie layer is very thin. I think it’s overpowered by the peanut butter layer. Also, I believe the original recipe calls for milk chocolate. I used bittersweet instead, because I thought the milk chocolate and peanut butter combination would be too sweet. I think this was a good call. All that said, Peter, who is NOT as big a fan of rice krispie treats as I am, thinks the bars were fine as is and would not increase the rice krispie treat to peanut butter and chocolate ratio. So, do what you must.
I am too lazy to type out the recipe, so please go to Smitten Kitchen’s post about it, which is here. Her photos and everything are way better than mine, anyway!
