Contest Time!

ecojot workbook flowers-700.jpg

I am a total sucker for contests. I always enter contests and sweepstakes and raffles and what have you. Some of my friends may laugh, but hello, you must play to win, and in the past I have won some nice little prizes (including a $1,000 gift certificate from Kenneth Cole!) Anyway, now it’s your turn to win! Jenny from Delight.com, a really fun online shop that you should already know about, contacted me recently with a contest idea, so here it is:
From now through Saturday, December 6, leave a comment on this post telling me which ecojot product is your favorite. I’ll randomly select a winner and announce the lucky ducky on Monday the 8th!
eco folder detail1-700.jpg
BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE. Cuz you see, everyone is a winner here at super eggplant, so delight.com is extending a generous 15 percent discount off any of their lovely items for this week. You must use this secret code: EggplantDelight
It’s case sensitive, so be cautious, you shoppers!
You probably don’t need any shopping ideas, but too bad. Here are a few of my favorites:
RuMeHolidayTree-700.jpg
I love these RuMe shopping bags! They’re really huge and sturdy, and I can get it over my shoulder. I keep one in the glove box and one in my purse.
BabyFamily1-700.jpg
These little Grobal flower pots are designed by Karim Rashid and come in really fun colors. I have a mini African violet in one, and it hasn’t died yet. I take that as a very good sign.
IpodSpeakersGroup-700.jpg
This would make the ultimate stocking stuffer for that Lego lover in your family. Come on, every family has one!
I could go on and on, but I don’t want to delay you from shopping! And don’t forget to enter the contest!! With my sad blogging, your odds of winning are quite good!

kaffee klatsch

coffee setup_1024x682.jpg
Here in the Pacific Northwest, we take our coffee quite seriously. People really, really like their coffee. I myself am very fond of coffee. I wouldn’t say I am fanatical or super snotty about it, but I do view non-coffee drinkers with a bit of suspicion* (but I don’t discriminate. Some of my best friends don’t drink coffee. They’re weird, though.)
coffee filters_1024x682.jpg
Anyway, the reason I bring up the whole coffee thing is because I was thinking about the single-cup drip-filter method (which Peter uses and which I employ for decaf) and how it is super delicious but oh! I use a plastic filter, and isn’t it bad to heat up plastic? I don’t really know, but I decided having a non-plastic filter might be a better way to go. It’s actually not that easy to find ceramic filter cones, and it is impossible to find them with a single drip hole. After years of experimentation, we have determined that more than one hole means the coffee drips too quickly, and you end up with watery, icky coffee. Melitta is the safe brand to go with, since they seem to push the single hole, but they make the plastic cones. I found this very cute ceramic filter cone (by Beehouse! I love Beehouse! They make very cute teapots) at Sweet Maria’s.
coffee filter bottom cu_1024x682.jpg
The problem is it has two holes (actually, this wasn’t a problem for me, since I am a careful and deliberate pourer, but Peter is a dump and run kind of guy. He made some snide remark about not having time to gently spritz the coffee grounds with water). But, there is a remedy. Peter went to the trusty hardware store and got a little cork plug, and now the filter works like a charm! Yay, coffee!
*Just another thing that endeared me to Kay was her confident and boisterous approach to espresso. She was tossing out words like “crema” and “macchiato” and telling me the best places to get espresso in Rome.

japanese pens from … japan!

japan pens_1024x682.jpg
My brother got back from Japan a couple weeks ago, and he brought me a bunch of pens! Now, I did send him off with a rather detailed list of pens, but I supplied him with the list because I thought it would make things easier for him. It didn’t, but that’s another story.
japan pens kurutoga_512x768.jpg
Ahh, the mechanical pencil. Not only is the Uni Kuru Toga a lovely and stylish pencil, but it is also rather high tech in its functionality. You know how the tip of a pencil gets worn down to a slant as you write? Well, the Kuru Toga spins the lead around so you always have a sharp point! No slants here! I got the .3mm (gotta love the super fine point) and the .5mm.
japan pens sign marker_512x768.jpgjapan sign pens sample_512x768.jpg
Here we have the Preppy Sign Pen and some fabric markers that came with a very snazzy template. The Pretty Sign Pen is pretty awesome. It comes with an ink cartridge like you’d find in a fountain pen. It is super smooth, and I find myself using it more frequently than a Sharpie.
japan pens sampler_512x768.jpg
And here we have some normal-colored pens. Now, I am generally VERY fond of Uni products, but I have to say these Power Tank ballpoint pens are not my favorites. I feel like my hand really has to work to get a nice line. It’s not like the super smooth Uni Jetstream Sport (swoon), which basically just writes on its own. That’s how smooth it is! I know the Uni-ball Signo 207 is popular with a lot of folks, but I think I got a bum unit, because this one has big ink boogers on the tip.
japan pens zebra nuspiral_512x768.jpgjapan zebra sample_1024x682.jpg
Here’s another ballpoint pen, the Zebra nuSpiral. I had to try this one because it’s just so cool looking. I was hesitant because it sports the gel grip, which usually freaks me out. I don’t know what it is about the gel grip, but it’s just weird, not quite squishy yet not quite hard. It feels odd against my fingers, and if I think about it too much I get kind of shaky and a bit nauseous, so let’s move on. The pen is actually quite nice. The ink flows smoothly, but I would prefer a darker ink. That’s the really great thing about the Uni Jetstream Sport–the ink is dark, and you’d swear it was a gel ink pen.
japan pens itoya closed_1024x682.jpgjapan pens itoya open_1024x682.jpg
One of the pens I asked for was an Itoya, which apparently is not readily available. My brother managed to find this Itoya ballpoint pen, which is quite cool. It’s a nice weight, too, and mini sized when folded up. Just pull it open, and voila, a full-size pen!
japan pens clown_582x768.jpg
And finally, the pen my brother refers to as the “clown” pen. Isn’t it gorgeous? It is a multi-pen that has two ballpoint colors (black and red) plus a mechanical pencil! It’s part of the Uni Jetstream series (it’s the Uni Jetstream F*series). The main issue I have with this pen is that the barrel is a tad on the large side to accommodate the pencil and the two pen colors, and it feels too big for my hand. I can’t get a really comfortable grip on it. But, it is really cute and otherwise practical (3 in 1!), so I will of course use it.
Thanks to my lunatic brother for all these awesome pens! And lest you feel left out, just remember that you can find most of these writing implements at the one-and-only JetPens.

finally

anthro shirt_512x768.jpg
It’s getting to be that time of year when it is dark a lot and thus not conducive to photographing candies and sewn items and the like. Oh well. Anyway, after a long break from my sewing machine (these things just happen), I finally had a chance to sit down and crank out this shirt. It’s a ripoff of an anthropologie shirt that baby adopter Melissa owns. Hers is made of a more lightweight fabric and has cute little cap sleeves. I wanted a winter version.
anthro shirt cu_1024x682.jpg
I got this fabric at the beginning of summer at the Fabric Depot outdoor sale. It’s a double-layer knit and is very cozy and warm. It is also on the thick side, which makes it kind of oddly clingy and made the placket a bit of a bear to deal with. The workmanship is not so great, but it is comfortable and casual, and hey, that’s my style (if you can even call it a style). I dig the mini ruffle.
On a different note, yeah, my brother got me a bunch of pens in Japan, but I just placed a substantial order with my beloved JetPens. I don’t really know what is wrong with me, but I do come from a long line of hoarders. Maybe that’s it.

new kisses

IMG_0604_1024x682.jpg
I love the seasonal and limited-edition flavors of various candies, and is it just me, or does it seem there are MORE when the holiday season rolls around? Today I found these hot cocoa creme Hershey’s Kisses and of course could not resist (they had a bunch of other flavors, too, like the cherry cordial and the mint and the caramel filled, and they were also in this sort of fun, retro packaging).
IMG_0606_1014x768.jpg
They are really quite delightful. The texture is softer than the conventional Hershey’s Kiss. I think it’s due to the “creme” center. Really, the center is like a chocolate truffle, kind of light and crumbly. The chocolate is not super strong or overpowering. I think they really did try to mimic the hot cocoa flavor, because there is a slight hint of, I don’t know, powdered milk, maybe? Whatever the case, these are tasty little buggers. I am trying to control myself and not eat the whole bag. I have to go in for a physical tomorrow morning, so I have to fast after 8pm. Maybe I should see how many I can eat by 8pm.

would you like a fish torso with that

IMG_0495_1024x682.jpg
Our friend Yumi came to visit from Japan a few weeks ago, and she brought me some super yummy fabric. The fabric above features “taiyaki,” a fish-shaped cake sort of deal with red bean paste inside. I love the combo of traditional and quirky.
IMG_0497_1024x682.jpg
This one says “kamawanu” on it. The story behind the design is really interesting. Here’s an explanation (stolen from here):
“The `Kamawanu` design consists of a combination of pictograms and syllabary characters, which are pronounced as `kama,` `wa` and `nu` respectively.
The first is a picture of a sickle tool, which is called `kama` in Japanese. The second picture is of a circle or ring, which is called `wa` in Japanese, and the final picture is the character `nu` from the Japanese hiragana syllabary. The combination of these produces the sound `kamawanu,` a phrase that translates as `to not bother` or `not care.`
In essence, it is the Japanese hieroglyphic version of `never bother` or `don`t worry.”
Pretty cool, huh? Stay tuned for more Japanese pen discussion. My brother got back from Japan last week and brought me a boatload of writing utensils.

the puff daddy revolution has begun

Puff Daddy blue_1024x724.jpg
Another Puff Daddy completed! This one is a non-wool version, just for kicks. I dug into my stash and combined ggh Sombrero (100% rayon) and ONline 15 Orlando (39% cotton, 39% acrylic, 22% nylon). Both are tape yarns, I guess. I really like how it turned out, and it is quite comfy, too.
In other critical Puff Daddy news,
* the magnificent Kay put the pattern up on Ravelry, and you can find it here
* I created a flickr group for the Puff Daddy. Of course, I am currently the only member …
* I heard from the lovely Linda of Yarnzilla, soon to be your one-stop shopping center for Puff Daddy kits! She gave me some background on Misti, the makers of Misti Handpaints Chunky, which was used for the Puff Daddy prototypes. Misti is a family-owned business that needs our support, so buy up if you can! I have to say that the Chunky is super yummy and luscious and soft.
That’s all I have to report for now. Let’s spread some Puff Daddy love!

Let the revolution begin

puff daddy me_713x768.jpg
Apologies for the Big Face Shot, but I’m betting your eyes are drawn to the delightful Puff Daddy rather than my mug. I have to tell you that I had nothing to do with this awesome scarflet that is going to be the latest rage. I found the thing in my father’s closet, but it was my friend Megan who figured out its purpose, and it was the one-and-only Kay of Mason-Dixon Knitting who created the pattern. She is awesome, plus her daughter is gorgeous. Check it:
puffcarrie.jpg

So the Puff Daddy is all i-cord, baby. It takes hardly any time to whip one up. Just think of all the Christmas gifts you can get done in ONE day. Think of how much cash you can score at the holiday bazaar. The possibilities are endless! I’m going to make one in cotton, too, as a neck-sweat grabber. And how about a sweet little wristlet mini Puff Daddy? Heck yeah!
puff daddy me and deeds_1024x682.jpg
And look, even pets love them (okay, so Deedle is looking so not amused, but we can pretend). I made mine out of Misti Alpaca Chunky, which is luscious stuff. You can make TWO out of one hank (though you can see I ran out on the second puff and had to improvise).
So, go to it, my fellow knitters! Millions of Puff Daddies circling the necks of loved ones will make the world a better place.
Download the pattern! Puff Daddy PDF file
I’m going to put it on Ravelry when/if I figure out how to do that. And maybe I’ll create a Puff Daddy flickr group? Anyway, here’s one last photo from the innovative and lovely offspring of Kay:

again with the japanese pens

IMG_0533_1024x682.jpg
I know it’s kind of a disease right now, this obsession with Japanese pens. I can’t really explain it. Today my mother and brother left for Japan*, and I gave my brother a rather detailed list of the pens and pencils I want him to bring back (all I requested are writing implements and the earl grey tea lip balm).
But anyway, my love affair with JetPens continues. Not only do I belong to their flickr group, but now I also am a member of their Facebook group. As a result, I have had the opportunity to participate in a couple of their promotions, which means, score! Free pens! Most recently I received two of the Uni-Ball Signo DX pens, one in 0.38mm in sky blue and one in 0.28mm in mandarin orange. The Uni-Ball Signo pen is a definite fan favorite. The PenAddict ranks these in his top five! They’re gel ink pens and have a nice, strong, fine point. The ink flows smoothly and without hesitation. I think I’d like a deeper color saturation, but this might be due to the colors I have. I asked my brother to pick up a couple in “normal” colors so I can test out my theory.
Some compare the Uni-Ball Signo DX to the Pilot Hi-Tec-C pens, but I think they are completely different animals. Here, I’ll prove it. Check out the following photo:
pen points_1024x682.jpg
On top is the Pilot, and the Uni-Ball Signo is below. See how different the points are? I like both, really, but I REALLY love the Pilot. I find the uber skinny tip and the ink flow to be superb, and the colors are nice and deep. You know, these pens are also similar to the Pentel Slicci. I’m not sure which I prefer between the Pentel and the Uni-Ball. The Uni-Ball is definitely more comfortable in my hand, since it has a rubberized grip (the Pentel sports a ridged plastic grip). Guess you’ll just have to order your own to see which you like better!
I have to say, too, that if you have any love for Hello Kitty, you definitely need to go to JetPens, because right now they have the Pilot Hi-Tec-C pens in a limited edition Hello Kitty series. I would not kid you about something like this.
*Since my webmaster is in Japan for two weeks, and my server lives in his basement, if there are any power surges or glitches, my blog may die and be dead until November 6 or so. Be warned. You can find me on flickr or, if we get the magic puff daddy scarflet going, on ravelry (I am supereggplant, goo goo ga joob).
