london calling

IMG_0271_1024x682.jpg
Well, Peter safely returned from his monthlong sojourn in England! He thoroughly enjoyed Chaucer Camp and learned a lot, so if you are ever in the mood to discuss Chaucer, you know who to call. It’s hard to believe he was gone for a full month, maybe because I wasn’t particularly productive. I didn’t even make it through the chore list he left me (and yes, he left me a chore list).
But anyway, he brought me some goodies, and it’s clear he knows me pretty well. The candy bar above is by Nestle, and apparently the whole “It’s not for girls” marketing campaign has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Peter and I, however, thought it was really funny, and poo on you, Nestle, because I ate the WHOLE THING with nary a man in sight! It is a nice, solid milk chocolate bar. Tasty.

And of course how could Peter go to London without visiting the Liberty store for me? He told me I would have crapped my pants, and he’s probably right. He got me two nice pieces of Liberty fabric. He felt the floral was representative of British prints, and he knows I like paisley and orange colors.
He also brought me some tea from Harrod’s, a little tote emblazoned with teacups and saucers (the photo is on my flickr site if you are curious), and some fun wrapping paper, some of which I cannot really display, as it has inappropriate language on it (some of you probably don’t know this, but I have a great fondness for cuss words). He also brought this instructional and authentic (it has grease smears on it) guide to pasties:

Kakigori

kakigori syrup_512x768.jpg
My kakigori (Japanese shave ice) syrup arrived! I know, it’s kind of silly to order shave ice syrup online, but I conducted a not-terribly-in-depth survey of local Asian markets, and none of them carried the Japanese syrup in matcha flavor. So, in steps Asian Food Grocer! Their shipping rates are very reasonable, and I ask, what price matcha? So, now it’s time for a kakigori party! In Japan they do all sorts of goofy things like scoop sweetened azuki beans onto the shaved ice, but I think I am going to opt for odango, little pounded sweet rice disks. I know, sounds kind of weird, but it’s yummy.

The Ice Pet was excavated from my parents’ house a couple weeks ago. I have fond memories of my mother making us kakigori with it. There are special round trays for freezing ice disks, which then clamp onto the Ice Pet. It regurgitates whisper-thin, snowlike shavings. Let’s hope the vintage, primitive Ice Pet is still functional after all these years!

the great panty experiment begins

panty spandex_1024x682.jpg
I am pleased, no, thrilled, to announce the arrival of the panty spandex! I also got some stretch stuff for the waistband and the legs, but I have to figure out what is supposed to go where. I tell ya, this panty stuff is complicated! Oh, and that tag that is pinned onto the fabric says “Dry Tech,” but it looks like “Dry Tick,” so I was really confused. Anyway, this weekend is kind of busy, so I don’t know how much panty sewing will be happening. PANTY PANTY PANTY PANTY! Someone I know, I can’t remember who, can’t stand the word PANTY. I, on the other hand, love it. It is a superb word. By the way, I purchased my panty supplies from Sew Sassy.

sew stripey

pochee thing.jpg
I’ve been a little preoccupied with knits as of late, perhaps because of this whole “I’m going to make my own panties” deal. So, this striped knit fabric has been in my stash for I don’t know how many years, but I finally decided to make something out of it (because I am preoccupied, you know, and my panty fabric hasn’t arrived yet). I used a pattern out of the autumn 2007 Poch

one man’s junk …

deeds and junk.JPG
Sunday I helped my brother and mother clean out a small portion of their basement. My father, you see, was the sort who became agitated whenever anything left the house. This is one of the reasons why there was always a large stack of paper napkins and ketchup packets next to his seat at the dining table.
ma and junk.JPG
Anyway, we unearthed a bunch of junk and a few goodies. The lemon twist in my mother’s hand there is kind of junky now, but I am thrilled to have found it, since a childhood friend and I had just recently been discussing the great virtues of the lemon twist. I think we’re ready for a big lemon twist comeback, don’t you?
twist board_1024x682.jpg
Ahh, the Twist Board. It is designed to trim your waistline! You stand on it and, you know, twist back and forth.
Oregon patch_1024x682.jpg
And this is kind of an awesome patch, but I don’t really get it. Is it because there’s a sun on it? That was the mistake, since the sun doesn’t come out in Oregon? Huh?
We also found a bunch of crazy, vintage drinking glasses still in their boxes. Most have never been used! I put photos of the tumblers plus more junk on my flickr site.

sew rushed

cotton friend top.jpg
Around 10pm the other night I got a hankering to get some sewing done, so I rushed down to my sewing room and started slapping together this top I had cut out. I learned it’s not a good idea to sew in a hurry, because if you’re like me and lazy to begin with, you get lazier and cut even more corners when you’re speeding along. So, I just sewed and didn’t pay attention to fit, which is why the armholes are a little lower than I would have liked. But see, lazy can be good sometimes, because I am going to just wear this anyway, armholes be danged. The pattern is from an old issue of Cotton Friend (Japanese craft magazine), and I’ve had the fabric for a long time (Heather Ross?).
The other excitement around here is that yesterday afternoon I discovered a DROWNED RAT IN THE BASEMENT TOILET. It was just about the most horrifying experience I have endured (I am exaggerating a bit, but yeah, it was gross). Peter picked a fine time to leave the country! I’m surprised Deedle didn’t find it and try to eat it. Urgh. Anyway, I am a total wimp, so I couldn’t deal with it. Luckily I have kind friends, and one came over with the intention to extract the dead rat. Instead, she just flushed it back down the toilet! She flushed 3 times for good measure then checked later to ensure the rat was back in the sewage pipes where it belongs (that is really disgusting). I don’t know if I will ever be able to pee in that toilet again. Perhaps it can be a growth area for me.

sew snug

BBW top.jpg
What’s wrong with this picture? Well, I’ll tell you. This is Built by Wendy Simplicity pattern 3835, and it’s a fairly popular one. The top has only four pattern pieces (well, I only used three, since I cut the back on the fold instead of making it two pieces). I initially tried to make this top with 3/4 sleeves, but the finished sleeves would not fit over my forearms. So, I made it short sleeved with FOE (fold-over elastic), but you know what? The sleeves are still a bit snug, and really, the armholes are too tight. This happened with another Built by Wendy pattern, too (the little cape jacket). Now, I do not have Popeye biceps or freakishly large arm stumps coming out of my torso, so I think the pattern is just, well, not so good. That said, I still like the top and will wear it, but I won’t be doing any poppin’ or krumpin’ in it.

wanna be starting something

something_1024x682.jpg

I’m sure this will surprise you, but I’m kind of a sucker for gimmicky deals. So, when I read about the Something Store, I was so excited I could barely breathe. Basically, ten bucks buys you “something.” I guess it’s kind of like a grab bag, and yeah, I love grab bags! The mystery of the unknown! The anticipation of what could be!
My something came the other day. It’s a USB mug warmer! Luckily, my father-in-law is totally in love with mug warmers, so he’ll be getting this one to add to his collection (I don’t think he has a USB one). I also sent “something” to Chicken. I kept it a surprise, of course, but then I finally had to ask her if she got SOMETHING in the mail. Well, turns out she did, but she thought it was from a crazy stalker. Apparently she got a blue satin prom handbag or, you know, something? Anyway, it’s all in good fun, and there are some awesome somethings out there!

Don’t make me sew my own panties

granny panties.jpg
No, not like these

Really, if I sewed at all these days I swear I would make my own underwear! You see, I have this idea for the perfect underwear. They’d be like boyshorts but longer (boyshorts are so short that my butt cheeks hang out, or if there is any sort of inseam at all, they ride up and create a big wad in my crotch. I don’t want that). They wouldn’t be snug like shapewear but rather sleek and comfortable, with a low-rise waistband. With regular panties, sometimes the elastic digs into my butt-leg crease, and that isn’t pleasant, nor does it do anything to alleviate the panty lines. SO, I want something like the granny panties in the photo above (like a 4-5″ inseam), but I don’t want them to reach up to my armpits, and I want cute colors. Has ANYONE seen ANYTHING like this out there, cuz if you haven’t, I AM MAKING MY OWN. WITH FOE (fold-over elastic).

bangers and mash

chaucer.JPG
I am going to have 7 extra goofing-off hours per week for 4 weeks this summer (see this), because Peter is going to England! For a month! I would like to say that I will use those extra hours for sewing or knitting, but truthfully I will probably just sleep more. But anyway, Peter is heading across the pond to study Chaucer with a group of geeks other teachers. He’ll be in London for 3 weeks then in Canterbury for a week. If anyone out there has any travel tips or interesting tidbits to share, please feel free. This will be his first trip to Europe!
