dump cake revisited

dump cake_1024x682.jpg
I wanted to make a quick and easy dessert, and it IS cherry pie season, so ding! How about a cherry dump cake? A cherry dump cake consists of a box of cake mix, some butter, and two cans of cherry pie filling. With a large scoop of vanilla ice cream, it makes for a complete and tasty dessert (it’s quite sweet, but what’s wrong with that?).
Read on for the recipe, lazy bakers!

new tools

hamanaka crochet hooks.JPG
My mother got back from another trip to Japan, and she brought back these Hamanaka Raku Raku crochet hooks that I requested. The timing was rather ideal, since Schmee, my crochet tutor, happened to be in town visiting. Unfortunately, our lessons began toward the end of her trip, so now of course I cannot remember how to do the granny hexagons.

Fabric Depot outdoor sale

Heads up for you peeps in Portland–Fabric Depot‘s annual outdoor sale is in full swing. It goes for the whole summer, and some interesting, random stuff can usually be found there. I stopped by last weekend and was excited to find some good, weird stuff and lots of cotton knits.
Here’s the weird:

Fab Depot crazy fab.JPG
It’s some nutty polyester fabric. I’m thinking maybe a skirt would be good, but it’d have to be lined; otherwise, my legs and butt will be all sweaty (yes, you’re welcome for that visual).
And some knit:

The knit stuff shrank up like crazy in the dryer. As you can see, it is a double layer and looks very cozy. Since it appears we aren’t going to have a spring or summer here in Portland, the cozy will come in handy! Now I just have to get sewing. I wonder if I remember how to turn on the sewing machine?

matcha sweets

matcha sweets.jpg
I’ve been meaning to make these Green Tea Sweets ever since the recipe was posted by Amai Bakery owner Kelli Bernard. Well, it only took me a year! I was coaxed into making these by Thuy, who was up visiting this week. Many recipes that claim to be matcha-flavored sweets are often disappointing, displaying wimpy and timid matcha flavors. These Green Tea Sweets, however, actually taste like matcha and have a buttery, shortbread texture. This recipe is a keeper! Thank goodness Thuy made me make them.

cake

onebowl chocolate cake.JPG

First, thanks for all the car candy stories! It sounds like that Orbit “mint mojito” gum is a favorite. I’m not supposed to chew gum, really, because of my TMD (temporomandibular disorder), but it couldn’t hurt to taste it, right?
Anyway, I have really been a lazy bum. I have not been knitting or sewing or doing much of anything except passing out in front of the TV. And in keeping with my lazy ways, yesterday I searched for a one-bowl chocolate cake recipe, and I think I found a winner: the One-Bowl Chocolate Mocha Cream Cake. The recipe is from Cooking Light and uses mayo and coffee as the moistening agents. The cake came out quite fudgy and chocolatey, so the fluffy, whipped cream-like mocha frosting paired nicely with it. It’s definitely a keeper! The recipe makes a 13 x 9-inch cake, so it’s pretty large. Unless you’re serving a big group of people, I would suggest maybe cutting the cake in half and frosting just that half (since the frosting has a whipped cream base, you can’t really leave it out overnight), or maybe going with a more traditional frosting would work? I’ll have to try that next time!

DWEC=driving while eating candy

car_candy.jpg
Hello. I am still writing for Candy Addict from time to time, and I am currently working on an article about car candy–you know, candy you always have in the car. I polled the other Candy Addict staffers, and, well, none of them seemed particularly into the car candy idea. Now, I thought EVERYONE had car candy, but apparently I was wrong (it’s been known to happen). But, I’d like to poll you all and hear about your car candy choices, car candy philosophies, all that good stuff. Fess up, won’t you?

okay, so I’m kind of a loser

fritz poutine.JPG
Yeah, so I go to Vancouver, BC, one of the most beautiful cities evah, and the only photos I take are of french fries (or pommes frites, if you prefer). Would it help if I said they were really, really good fries? They are from Fritz European Fry House. As you can see, they have poutine! I had never tried it before, and really, I have always wanted to, since it sounded like my ideal meal: french fries with cheese curds and gravy. Yum! Fritz offers a bunch of different dipping sauces for the fries. I don’t remember which ones we got, but they were good!

The weather in Vancouver was absolutely gorgeous, and it was sunny and cool for the race (the Vancouver Half-Marathon), which snaked through downtown and then all the way around Stanley Park. Vancouver also has pot clubs (for all you stoners out there) and sells codeine-laced medications over the counter. Rock on, rockah!

later, alligators!

isabel.jpg
Yo! So I’m headed out of town for a few days. Some friends and I are headed north to run in the Vancouver 1/2 Marathon (that would be in Canada). I haven’t been to Vancouver (or Seattle, for that matter) in a couple decades, so I am looking forward to it.
Friday is Action Hero Melissa‘s birthday. It is a milestone birthday, so drop on by and wish her a happy one if you are so inclined.
Ooh, our New Seasons delivery just came! Time for strawberry ice cream!

no more blue house

asbestos removal front_1024x682.jpg
We had all the asbestos siding taken off the house the other day. These guys put on their biohazard suits and their masks and put up tape that said, “DANGER!” on it, and I stayed quarantined inside. It was kind of cool. Of course, now this means we have to prep and paint the exterior. I’d kind of like to get more of the interior done first!

oops, I forgot to blog!

Deedle Apr08 6_1024x682.jpg

Holy crap but I am getting REALLY lousy at this whole blogging thing! I haven’t really been making anything or doing anything except passing out from my allergies. Hopefully this latest arsenal of drugs will do the trick. Carolyn is coming for a weekend visit, and I am planning on eating a lot of good food and laughing so hard that stuff comes out of my nose.
