birthday cake

sashi cake.JPG

It was my brother‘s birthday on Saturday, so I decided to bake a cake. I’ve been purchasing birthday cakes lately, which is fine, but I actually like baking cakes, you know? So when I saw this great cake recipe on Coconut & Lime, I decided to bake away. It’s a Vanilla Bean Layer Cake with Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting. It uses vanilla paste, which I was all into when I found it several years ago at Trader Joe’s. The only problem was I could never figure out what to do with it. Problem solved!
The recipe calls for 8-inch round pans, but I only had 9-inch pans, which meant I didn’t have quite enough frosting. I did a sort of crumb layer (you smear a thin layer of frosting on the cake then chill it, so you end up with a smooth surface for the final layer of frosting. That way you don’t get the mini crumbs and cake chunks in your frosting, which often happens to me), and while the cake was chilling, I made half a batch of frosting from the back of the Hershey’s Special Dark Dutch-Process Cocoa can. I then mixed that with the remainder of the chocolate cream cheese frosting, and yay, I had enough, and it was very chocolatey. The cake itself is very moist (even with nonfat milk) and has a really nice vanilla essence to it. This one’s definitely a keeper!

stolen baubles

I went to Susan‘s book reading at Powell’s the other evening (this one). There was a great turnout, and even more exciting, Susan was generous and organized enough to bring beads and fixings and supplies for everyone to make their own sets of earrings!

I have a confession to make. I was too hot and flitty to focus on crafting a set of earrings right there in the store, so I STOLE SOME BEADS. I already fessed up to Susan, so it’s okay. Also, I made the necklace and earrings based on designs from her book (that’s Bead Simple, you know)! I just love these giant faceted beads. If I jump up and down with the necklace on, I think it’d smack and break my glasses, so I have to be very cautious. I must avoid any overexcitement. Who knew wearing jewelry came with such responsibilities!

I did not make this bag

I should have blogged about this earlier, but my allergies have me so zonked out that I find I am unable to tackle even the most basic of tasks. Anyway, check out this awesome messenger bag that Splatgirl made me!

splat bag.JPG
I know, it’s a lousy photo. I’m trying to convince myself that getting a better camera will improve my photos, but who am I kidding? Anyway, Splatgirl’s got some mad sewing skillz! I sent her this fabric because even though I loved it, I knew I would probably never get around to making anything with it. I did NOT expect her to make me something fabulous with it! Here’s the inside flap of the bag:

The bag is really sturdy and holds A LOT, and lucky for you peeps out there, she is making them and selling them, along with her MOOPockets, on her etsy site.

bead on it

I have been inspired by Susan’s new beading book, Bead Simple

And, since I happened to be breakfasting next door to a bead store yesterday, of couse I popped in and got some chain. Now, my beading skills are pretty much nonexistent (I’m lacking those fine motor skills), so even the simple projects are pretty challenging. Thanks to Susan’s detailed instructions, though, I was able to cobble together a necklace (I followed the directions for Citrine Spaces and Sparkles Pendant).

Now I’m going to be on the lookout for more chain (boy, that stuff is expensive) and faceted glass beads! If you know of some good sources, please feel free to share.
Oh, and if you’re in Portland, Susan’s going to be giving a reading/interactive demo at Powell’s on Monday, March 7, at 7:30pm!

vested interest

I was ready to give up on myself and knitting, but then I decided I just needed an attainable goal. So, in came the vest (woohoo! No sleeves! And I DO love vests) and chunky yarn (fat needles=quick knittin’).

cork vest.JPG
I used my knitting software (I have Knitware, which I bought several years ago) and leftover Rowan Cork. I didn’t think I’d have enough of the green to do a solid-colored vest, so I added some random stripes. At first I thought it was looking too, I don’t know, 70s, but I like the way it turned out, and it keeps my core warm. I can’t say this project has jumpstarted my knitting again, but I suppose I can always keep knitting chunky vests!

Beads and Biscuits = Bliss

susan and book and biscuit.JPG
Susan, biscuit, and bead book

Oh the weather outside is frightful, but despite the SNOW and blizzardlike conditions, it was a good day. I met Susan and Action Hero Melissa at Pine State Biscuits for lunch, and boy, them biscuits were TASTY. Here’s what I had:
pinestbiscuits.jpg
It’s the McIsley: biscuit, fried chicken, pickles, mustard, and honey. Super delicious. Pine State opened quite recently, and unfortunately they only have THREE tables in there. You can imagine how packed the place gets. They used to sell their biscuits at the Portland State Farmer’s Market, and even then it was hard to land a biscuit–the lines were LONG, and they’d sell out quickly.
BUT I DIGRESS. The biscuit was sublime, but even more exciting was getting a copy of Susan’s new book, Bead Simple. It is gorgeous and weighs a ton and is crammed full of really great beading projects (and no, none of that crazy beading stuff from the 70s). I am excited to hawl out my little pliers and give these patterns a shot. Really, it is beautiful, and there are lots of basic projects (I am a novice) and thorough instructions. Not only are the photographs yummy, but the illustrations are really nice as well. I am really thrilled to have my paws on this book!
Check out Susan’s blog for more info on the book. She has set up a flickr page for projects, and she’s doing an interactive reading of sorts at Powell’s on Monday, April 7, at 7:30pm.

easter candy on sale

nerds bumpy jellybeans.jpg
Okay, kids, the Easter candies should be on sale now, so it’s time to head out and stock up! I actually bought three bags of these Nerds Bumpy Jellybeans the other day because I was afraid they were just seasonal. Fortunately, they are available yearround as Giant Chewy Nerds or something. These jellybeans are seriously delicious and delightful. They are kind of ugly, though, so you might not think they would be so juicy and fruity and wonderful. Don’t judge a jellybean by its casing! I wrote a review about these little nuggets for Candy Addict. You can read it here.

I am such a loser

You know, you miss a few days of blogging, and it gets easier and easier to just not blog. Add to that my lack of sewing, baking, and knitting, and there’s not much to blog about. Eating, though, I’ve been doing plenty of that. Whatevah!

greyston brownie.JPG
I made these brownies about a month ago. I have a hazy recollection of them. Ha! The recipe is from the Greyston Bakery Cookbook, and the Greyston Bakery is famous for providing the brownies for Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream. That fact alone should prompt you to run toward your baking equipment.
The brownies were super chocolatey, but they weren’t all that chewy. I think I prefer a brownie that has a good chew to it (but not too chewy, mind you). Anyway, I took these to my crafty group, and it turned out that another member made brownies as well (hers were from a box). So, we got to have a brownie taste-off. It was about 50-50. The texture of the box brownies is hard to beat–moist and smooth, but the chocolate flavor of the Greyston brownies was more pure and more, I don’t know, grownup? I wouldn’t turn down either!
Read on for the recipe …

True confession

I have to be honest–I am not a huge fan of buttercream frosting.

cupcake_jones.JPG
I thought I was, but then I realized I was fooling myself. It’s just too, you know, buttery. I really prefer cream cheese frosting. That said, I won’t turn away buttercream frosting. But the reason I am blathering on about buttercream frosting is because I got these cupcakes from Cupcake Jones, and all but the carrot cake cupcakes have buttercream frosting, and hence my epiphany. So Cupcake Jones is among the newest of the cupcake places here in Portland. I got a $20 coupon for $10 through this site, and for that $20 (okay, $19.50) I got 6 cupcakes. Yes, that is $3.50 per cupcake, which does seem a little spendy to me, but whatever, they are cupcakes, and I’ll pay for them (but actually I didn’t pay full price, did I?). The carrot cake one was pretty moist and tasty. The chocolate cake was on the dry side, as was the lemon cake (but it still tasted pretty lemony). They are good-sized cupcakes, and they have some filling, which is fun, but I wasn’t overwhelmed. That doesn’t mean I won’t go there again or would turn down one of their cupcakes if presented with one. Or two.
