more matcha!

caela matcha candy.JPG
Check it out! More matcha candy! This is courtesy of Caela in Chicago. The most important part of this post, really, is not the matcha candy but the fact that Caela works at Angel Food Bakery in Chicago, and it looks like a totally awesome bakery, so if you live in Chicago YOU SHOULD GO AND EAT CAKE. Also, they are working on a cupcake-of-the-month club, which is such a genius idea it makes me want to cry.

Egg-ceptional and eggs-traordinary

eggmaker.JPG

I try not to buy kitchen gadgets that are mono focused. They just take up a lot of unnecessary space, and really, how often do you use gadgets that can be used for only one thing (okay, the espresso machine is an exception). That said, I just couldn’t resist this Chef’s Choice Egg Cooker. We’ve been eating a ton of eggs lately. I eat a hard-boiled egg every morning for breakfast, and Peter has been on his soft-boiled egg kick. I know it’s not that hard to make hard-boiled eggs, but I have been more pressed for time in the mornings as of late, so okay, that’s how I justified the purchase. I have no regrets whatsoever. This sucker makes perfect hard-boiled eggs, and it also makes great poached eggs! We never used to have those at home, but now we routinely have poached eggs and toast for lunch. Or dinner. Or breakfast. I heart my bulbous egg cooker. And that is my consumeristic note of the day. Thank you, and have a nice weekend.

cookie time

dunk mug.JPG
I have been coveting this dunk mug ever since I first learned of it, I dunno, a year ago? It has a slot to hold cookies! How clever is that! They didn’t seem to be available in the United States at that time, but then I found them on Charles & Marie, a cool etailer that I haven’t quite figured out. It’s a shop, but they also have limited edition products and items that are only on sale for one day. Anyway, that is all a very complicated way of saying that THEY HAD PINK DUNK MUGS ONE DAY, and I had to get one. HAD TO. The mug itself is a little top heavy, but I suppose if you balance the bottom with a fat, chewy cookie, you’ll be just fine.

I am confused

deeds vd2008.JPG

Wow. I just spent the day rearranging my home office, migrating to a new computer, and unpacking my new monitor (dudes, I got a 30″ monitor. It’s freaking me out). I also was forced to install Microsoft Office 2007, which looks totally different from Office 2000, so that, too, is freaking me out. Anyway, I just wanted to put up a quick post to let you know I’m going to be freaked out for a while, but I did try a new brownie recipe today and hope to share that with you soon.

I got to boogie

turtleneck thing.JPG
I made this turtleneck thingy more than a month ago, but I haven’t been able to get a good photo of it (still haven’t, as you can see!). I used some vintage knit interlock, but I didn’t know it was going to look so stupendously 70s until I put it on. I think maybe it’s the elastic in the cuffs that makes it so disco. The pattern is from the fall 2007 issue of the Japanese sewing magazine Poch

don’t stop ’til you get enough

arabia eggcups.JPG
My friend Taya is a complete freak, and I mean that in the best way possible. She has a thing for dishes, you see, and she has this uncanny encyclopedic knowledge of china patterns. She can rattle off designers, dates, pattern names, what have you, of china from all over the world (though she is particularly well versed in British china). Anyway, as soon as I casually mentioned my newfound interest in eggcups, she flooded my inbox with links to all manner of eggcups. She knows my tastes, so she turned me on to these gorgeous eggcups by Finnish company Arabia. I scored these on ebay, and now I am done with eggcups. Really.

red velvet cupcakes. again

red velvet cupcakes p.JPG
Man, I just can’t get enough of red velvet cupcakes or cream cheese frosting! The last time I made red velvet cupcakes was for the jar cakes. This time I used a recipe that calls for cake flour instead of all-purpose flour, and I have to say it’s my favorite. The cake flour creates a light, delicate crumb, which I find delightful. If you prefer a denser cake, then you should go for the all-purpose flour recipe. I gave my mother a couple cupcakes, and she really liked these, so all the more reason to keep making them!
Read on for the recipe …

super salt

matcha salt.JPG
If I had know that my old college classmate and buddy Eric was going to become a celebrated chef and cookbook author, I would have been more stalkerish! Oh well. Yeah, so back in the day, he was just Eric, but now he’s the Breakaway Cook and has, of course, his own blog, where he is kind enough to share cooking tips and recipes. When I saw his post about making matcha salt, you can bet my head nearly exploded.
matcha salt on eggs.JPG
I happened to have some chunky grey sea salt and matcha on hand, so I ground up some matcha salt and had it on my eggs. I usually don’t salt my eggs, so this was a bit of a shock to my system, but it was still delicious. I hope meatlovers will rejoice in the burst weisswurst (it probably wasn’t supposed to explode like that, but meat does unexpected things sometimes).
Eric’s cookbooks, The Breakway Cook and The Breakaway Japanese Kitchen (you can find this one used on amazon. I don’t know if it’s out of print. I have a copy, and it’s great), are a welcome addition to any kitchen.
