running on empty

marathon number.JPG

Sunday I saw two people throw up, both before 11am. The first, witnessed just after 6am, looked to be a gal who had been up all night. The second, observed around 10:40am, sadly was about a block away from the marathon finish. I saw her stop and throw up three times, all in the course of about 20 seconds. Anyway, I ran the Portland Marathon on Sunday. The weather was pretty ideal, but I ran out of energy for, oh, the entire second half of the race, so that wasn’t much fun. My brother always volunteers at mile 12, and I yelled his name several times as I ran past him, but he just stared off into space. Action Hero Melissa was kind enough to show up at mile 22, and it was good to see her smiling face! I keep doing these things, so I guess I must get some sort of enjoyment out of them, but really, I sometimes wonder what I am thinking!
In other news, I am no longer involved with superbuzzy. I, well, there’s not much more I can say about it but to thank you all for your tremendous support. Maybe now I’ll have more time to blog!

I see ewe

The Hedster, Action Hero Melissa, and I headed down to Canby, Oregon, today to hit the Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival.

This dude was just sitting there with hay sticking out of his mouth. I thought that was pretty funny. Anyway, the festival was really quite impressive. There was a large array of vendors, selling everything from roving to kettle korn, lots of livestock, spinners spinning away, contests (including a lamb cookoff), you name it. I am definitely going to make this an annual excursion!

This cute lamb is a hair sheep. If Deedle were a lamb, this is what she would look like, I think.

flat and chewy

I haven’t had the chance to do much baking in my new oven yet, but of course the things I have baked have been new recipes, so I can’t really figure out if the oven is “working” or what.

flat and chewy cookies.JPG
I baked these Flat & Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies the other day, and they kind of freaked me out–they are super spreaders! I thought I had done something incorrectly, but then I figured, hey, they probably aren’t called FLAT and CHEWY for nothing. They have a tablespoon of salt in them, so after a couple of bites the salty flavor totally hits you. The salt really enhances the flavor of the chocolate, I think. I got this recipe from Action Hero, who in turn got it from the NY Times Magazine.
Anyway, I still haven’t unpacked the whole kitchen yet, and it’s still pretty messy, but here’s a shot of one corner (the corner with the oven!):

Please ignore the fact that we don’t have knobs on all the cabs yet.
Read on for the recipe!

gearing up for halloween

It appears that large retail establishments are already preparing for Halloween, and really, not a minute too soon! I love Halloween, so the longer it lasts the better!

hershey_kisses_candy_corn.jpg
I got these babies the other day and was pretty egg-cited about them. I quite fancy the limited edition Hershey’s Kisses, and these sounded pretty interesting. I wrote a review of them for Candy Addict, but I can tell you here that they are pretty darn disgusting and taste nothing like candy corn. Best to stick to the real thing if you like candy corn (and I do. I also like those little pumpkins!).

Wishful

Egads!

new sweater.JPG
Yes, I started a sweater. It’s going to be a simple cardigan. I haven’t knit anything in eons, but I am hopeful the tide is shifting.

whoah

Well, it has been a dreadfully long time! I have excuses, but they are lame. I am working on getting my act together, but I am not holding my breath.

crater lake wizard island.JPG
Crater Lake is really stunning, but nobody told me the marathon was going to be straight uphill then straight downhill. It was still fun, though, and who knew they’d have hummus and pita bread at the cafe?
I love Carolyn. She went to Belgium and actually brought me back macarons! Unfortunately, they did not travel particularly well:

The kitchen is pretty much complete, but I haven’t taken any photos, nor have I unpacked anything. In fact, we still haven’t located our pots and pans, so I still can’t really cook. This is when we were on the home stretch and a day before Peter’s parents arrived for a visit:

We also had insulation blown into our upstairs area. It’s this crazy stuff called Icynene, and it is pretty high tech but messy:

My aunt, her sister-in-law, and a family friend are visiting from Japan, but between our own visitors and superbuzzy, I hadn’t had a lot of time to hang out with them. Today, though, I spent some quality US time with them:

I am a good citizen

deeds on new bed.JPG
Melissa made Deedle this lovely bed for the warehouse. Deedle is testing it out on our couch (please ignore the gross towelket* under the lovely bed). I was really touched that Melissa made this bed, because the gal is not particularly crazy for dogs. You can see that Deedle loves it, and she will love resting on it at the warehouse if she is allowed to go to the warehouse. Our landlord is being kind of a stickler about the rules, and now that we are in he is insisting that Deedle obtain the Canine Good Citizen certificate in order to be allowed on the premises. I checked the lease, though, and it says “good citizen” in quotes like that, nothing about the whole AKC affiliation. So, I’m going to push my luck, because a) I don’t think she can pass the CGC test, and b) nobody messes with my dog.
So superbuzzy is having its first-ever sale, so I hope you will all go take a look. We also got a ton of new fabrics, including some very cute little animal twills and new colors of the kerchief girl fabric. There are some good books as well, especially the ones for kids, and for you patchwork enthusiasts, I think “My Patchwork Time” is quite nice.
Now I am off for the next few days to parts unknown (okay, to Crater Lake). The Hedster and I are going to run the Crater Lake Rim Run Marathon, which should be an adventure. We’re just doing it as a training run, and today we decided we don’t even care if we finish. It’s on my birthday, and I don’t particularly want to kill myself on my birthday. I was in bed all day today with a raging migraine (which did make me want to kill myself), so it’s not like I’m 100%, anyway. I am rambling. Is this what migraine meds do to you?
*In Japan they have these awesome things called “towelkets,” which as you might guess is a combination between a towel and a blanket. They are GREAT for sweaty summer sleeping. You can use them as sheets and as blankets. Those Japanese, so clever.

In case you think the layout looks like hell

This isn’t Mariko, this is her brother writing.
My sister went and changed something. Probably the Superbuzzy image on the side. It took some screwing around to get it to look OK in Safari and Firefox, but things look like hell in Internet Explorer.
My sister, being the kind soul that she is, didn’t tell me about any of this until after 10:30PM. It is now about 11:30PM and I have to get up at 6AM to go to my hellish job that I hate. I will try to fix things tomorrow.
If you are looking at this site with Internet Explorer, please get with the program and use something else. I’d suggest buying a Mac, but do what you have to.
P.S. You can leave comments but I’m not likely to see them.

we went

Should I be embarrassed to admit that the opening of the new Portland IKEA might be one of the highlights of my year? It’s so spacious! So bright! So colorful! Swedish meatballs!

ikea frantz.JPG
Sam was particularly excited about the french fries that Action Hero Melissa shared with him. And apparently they eat soup with forks in Canada (observe what Melissa is eating). The apple cake was pretty good, but where is the Swedish Princess Cake? That’s what I want!

Cotton Time!

This summer has been much cooler than last summer, so it hasn’t been necessary to wear sleeveless tops much. Little cap sleeve deals, though, are just the ticket! So before things went from crazy busy to super crazy busy, I found a minute to make a new summer top from the summer issue of Cotton Time.

cotton time top.JPG
I was going to make it out of one of the double gauze fabrics we have at superbuzzy, but I decided I should just dig something out of my stash in case the pattern didn’t work out. The top has a little bit of embroidery on it, though you can’t really see it, and the sleeves have a cute little bias tape edging. The neck is more open than I am accustomed to, but overall I like the pattern quite a bit. The pattern only comes in one size, and I didn’t have to make any adjustments (I know that sounds really obnoxious, but hey, these are my people, so it worked out). I’m going to try it out with double gauze next!
