when you just need a cupcake

I enjoy baking from scratch, but I also don’t object to a few shortcuts here and there. Much of the boxed, processed stuff is nasty, but with help from the Cake Mix Doctor, a boxed cake mix can turn into something quite delightful. I have The Cake Mix Doctor cookbook, which is great, but these days I’ve been referring more frequently to Cupcakes: From the Cake Mix Doctor. Say what you want about cupcakes and their trendiness, but I have always and will always love cupcakes.

The thing about cake mixes is they crank out a sure thing. The cupcakes I made were very moist and chocolatey. Yum.

Long live Sulu

Despite what you might think, I was never a Trekkie. I remember coming home from school every day and watching a whole lineup of shows, like the Brady Bunch and Bewitched. Star Trek came on at 4pm or 5pm, I can’t remember which, and inevitably I would fall asleep. So anyway, I was never a huge fan, but now I kind of like the actors. William Shatner is kind of insane in a self-parodying way, what with the Travelocity commercials and his crazy CD, and that Leonard Nimoy Spock dude is always interesting, but my favorite is George Takei. Never mind that he is one of my people–I have liked him ever since I saw him in the flesh nearly 2 decades ago. I lived for a brief time in Los Angeles, and I liked participating in fun runs. There was a Chinatown run that went near Dodger Stadium or something. I remember crossing the finish line and hearing that unmistakable deep voice say, “Where’s the beer tent.” I looked over and saw a sweaty George Takei!
Of course, that’s neither here nor there. The reason I’m thinking about George Takei is because of this hilarious video.

Oooh, I hear laughter in the rain

The other day I went to the Knittn’ Kitten with Action Hero Melissa, Susan of Susan Stars, and Sister Diane of the Portland Church of Craft (and other organizations. That gal is busy). The Knittn’ Kitten has all kinds of vintage fabrics and yarns and crafty items. They had a nice selection of old craft magazines, including McCall’s Needlework and Crafts. I snagged the spring/summer 1970 issue.

McCall needlework 1970.JPG

This particular issue seemed to have quite a few small projects, which appealed to me, even though I seem to be in a major crafting rut right now.

Fun with fruit! I love the “hi” and “bye” signs, too.
This issue also features some needlework ideas. I like the motto in this one:

Ha ha! Easy does it, indeed!
And then if you need a new summer wardrobe, McCall’s is ready with some ideas. Dig the crocheted number, though it’s rather racy, and do you suppose Peter will let me aboard his sailboat if I wear the nautical outfit?

red velvet

Though my index finger was aching from the rotary cutter incident, it didn’t hurt enough to keep me from baking. I had read about these Red Velvet Cake Sandwich Cookies on Nic’s food blog (recipe here) and had to try them out. I love Red Velvet Cake, and these were little sandwich cookies with Mascarpone Cream Cheese Frosting squished in the middle. Yowza.

These little guys were fun to whip up. The cookies are rather soft and reminded me of muffin tops. I didn’t have mascarpone, so I made a basic cream cheese frosting with 1/2 stick of unsalted butter, 1/2 a brick of cream cheese, a splash of vanilla extract, and 2 cups of powdered sugar. These cookies are really perfect for frosting lovers who feel sad after they’ve eaten the top of a cupcake and have frostingless cake remaining. I was really happy to be able to share these with Action Hero Melissa and Susan, who is up visiting from LA. Poor Sister Diane can’t eat sugar, so she got nothing (hey Diane, I’ll use Splenda next time!).
Again, the recipe is here.

blood and sweat

I haven’t shed any tears over superbuzzy yet, but the other day I did draw some blood.

finger injury.JPG
I sliced through my finger with the rotary cutter (I did not, however, drop any blood onto the fabric). I now have this big skin flap, and it’s still pretty tender, so I can’t use my index finger. You don’t realize how much you use all your digits until one of them becomes lame!
And speaking of superbuzzy, Kelly has been working her little tail off on the site, and guess what? We now accept Paypal! We also have a few new items, including a very cool Etsuko Furuya wasp fabric and a super cute postcard booklet, but I am feeling too lazy to upload photos. We’re also going to have a superbuzzy blog soon, and we’re hoping that will keep all our customers informed of small updates and provide ideas and inspiration for all things crafty!

Happy Valentine’s Day

Sorry for my extended absence. Right when I got caught up on the superbuzzy packages, I got the nasty cold that’s been going around, and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better. Today I had a coughing attack so severe I was convinced I was going to throw up (I was actually gagging because of the force of the cough).
Have I ever discussed my collection of Japanese tins? Those Japanese, they are really into souvenirs and the giving of gifts and over-the-top packaging, so you can just imagine what this means for the decorative tin industry. I have a small collection, mostly hand-me-downs from my mother. The tins once held cookies (hello, Yoku Moku) or rice crackers or chocolates. I was too lazy to photograph them all (and really, they’re not that exciting), but I did photograph my latest acquisition, and I think it is quite appropriate for Valentine’s Day.

lovers lane box.JPG
Lovers’ Lane! These held chocolate delicacies from Sapporo. I like how the tin tells you exactly what the sweets are like: “incredibly smooth” and “deeply satisfying.” Here’s a closeup of a particularly interesting phrase:
lovers lane closeup.JPG
Can you read that? “These chocolates are indigenous to Hokkaido and most suitable for souvenirs.” Very helpful information, no?
Have a great Valentine’s Day, everyone, and I’ll try to get my act together and start crafting again.

young crafters

Do you remember your very first craft? I used to make glitter pictures in my fort under the dining room table, but I guess that doesn’t really count. The first big thing I remember making is a knitted vest. I asked my mother to teach me to knit, and then I got some super bulky, itchy wool yarn in a charcoal grey and knit up a vest that buttoned up the back. It’s probably buried in my parents’ house somewhere.
I started thinking about early crafting a couple weeks ago when my friend’s 10-year-old gave me some handmade earrings:

lil earrings.JPG
She received a bead kit for Christmas and proceeded to craft many sets of earrings. She knows I like pink and orange (she and I have similar taste), so she made these for me. She has always been crafty, but I think these beaded items might be her first actual craft, if you know what I mean. I hope she keeps it up!
So, what was your first crafting endeavor?

blouse pants skirt

I accidentally bought another Japanese sewing book a while back.

blouseskirtpants cover (Large).JPG
You can probably guess what kinds of patterns are in the book. ISBN 4-579-11096-X
I thought it would have just really basic patterns, but there are some cute items in there.
blouseskirtpants tunic (Large).JPG
I want to make this tunic top, I think, but I’ll probably make it shorter and less, you know, flowy.
I also like this little utility apron thing, though I think the model is wearing it as a skirt.

gummi fever

Howdy folks. I’m afraid I am still not caught up entirely on superbuzzy orders, but I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel! We’ve learned a lot from this last big update. It’s really important for us to get orders out to customers as quickly as possible, so I apologize for the current delay!
But enough about packing orders! Let’s talk about candy! I’ve talked about Cubyrop candies before. Recently Anjali blogged about Cubyrop GUMMI candies. As you can imagine, I nearly wet myself when I read about them. I also figured I would not have a chance to try them, since I can’t even manage to find the regular Cubyrop candies around here. Well, the other day a mysterious little package arrived in the mail from Sasha in Seattle.

cubyrop gummi.JPG
I can’t even describe to you how thrilled I was. It seriously made my day.
cubyrop gummi closeup.JPG
They come in three flavors: peach, lemon, and grape. The gummi consistency is relatively firm, which gives the candy a really nice chew. The flavors are nice and tart, particularly the lemon. So, not only are they delicious, but they are also beautiful–lovely little sugary sparkly cubes of goodness!
