stateside

Hey! So Kelly and I are back in the United States. We had a great trip to Japan, and we were really lucky to be able to meet up with so many crafty bloggers! I never imagined we would actually be able to meet so many. When I get pictures uploaded and get over my jetlag (as well as some crazy disease that kept me in bed all day today), I’ll provide more details and links. Hope all of you have been good during our absence!

fabric fun

Hey Kids! Well, Kelly and I are still in Japan, and each day has been full and more exciting than we had imagined. I wish we could upload some photos so you could see our haul from Nippori Textile Town. I’ll just say that I think any superbuzzy customers out there will be pleased!
Let’s see, did I mention that we met Anjali and Molly the other night in Nagoya? We had a great meal and celebrated Kelly’s birthday. It was totally not weird meeting them. At one point Molly had called me, and I happened to be in a toilet stall at the time. It was a Japanese style toilet, and while I was talking to Molly I dropped a shopping bag into it. Talk about an ice breaker! Yesterday we met Jen and Stefana (I’ll provide links later. I am in a rush right now. Sorry!), and today Stefana is coming with us to the quilt show in Yokohama.
It’s been really fun getting to know Kelly a bit better. I don’t know if you all know, but we met through the blog world and had only met in person on two occasions before coming to Japan and spending 24/7 together! We’re getting along great (as far as I can tell, anyway. She is an easy and pleasant companion, so I’m the lucky one!). Did you know that she is unaffected by caffeine? I don’t know if I should be happy or sad for her on that one. She also can’t eat raw tomatoes, and she hates mushrooms. Oh, coffee makes her sick to her stomach, too. That’s sad. Okay, I gotta run now. Hope everyone is doing well out there!

we are here!

Hey folks! Kelly and I are in Japan! Right now we are in a Capsule Hotel in Osaka. Yesterday we met Kat, who was kind enough to take us shopping to a bunch of craft shops. All the good stuff has put us in semi-catatonic states, I tell you! Okay, we skipped dinner and have to find breakfast now, so that’s it for now.

I’m leaving!

I’m taking off for the airport in less than an hour! I thought I was handling this whole whirlwind trip pretty well, but let’s just say I had to break out the Pepto Bismol chewables this morning. Anyway, Kelly and I will try to blog a little while we’re in Japan, but I can’t make any promises–I’m generally not that organized. Be good, y’all, and I’ll see you in just over a week!

and a happy halloween to all!

It was a beautiful, super cold day here in Portland. I happened to be near the Helen Bernhard Bakery today, so I popped in to get some Halloween cookies.

Helen Bernhard’s has been around forever. We used to get the cloverleaf rolls every year for Thanksgiving, and all our birthday cakes came from there. I swear their frosting roses tasted better than anyone else’s. Anyway, I was telling all this to the woman who helped me, even though she seemed supremely uninterested and kept giving me these looks like I should adjust my medication. What can I say? I was jacked up on caffeine from Peet’s Coffee, plus being around baked goods tends to make me overly enthusiastic.
We had 38 trick-or-treaters tonight, which means I have an extra box of full-size candy bars. That’s kind of dangerous. Here’s a shot of a couple of my favorite trick-or-treaters.

time to go hedgehog wild

Attention, shoppers! We’ve posted an update to superbuzzy that includes both new items and restocks. You’ll be pleased to know that we have some hedgehog fabric back in stock, and we have three colorways!

We also got in some really cool waffle weave with cute vintage kitchen utensils:

It’s 85% cotton and 15% linen and would make great dish towels (remember that the holidays are coming up!).
There are some additional colorways in the vintage bingo tickets, milk bottle caps, and feedsack reproduction, too. Here’s the milk bottle caps on a chocolate background:

There are several more items, including ladybug trim and frog fabric, so please check out the shop if you have a chance! Also, please note that orders placed after Tuesday probably will not ship until the week of November 12 (I will try to ship anything that is ordered on Wednesday, but I’ll also be busy packing, so I can’t make any promises!).
Happy Halloween!

halloween sweetness

Behold the famous pink cookie of Spokane’s Rocket Bakery disguised as a Halloween pumpkin!

Spooky! Thanks go to the Trader Joe-less Jennifer for this lovely pile of cookies.
And remember what I said about hedgehogs? Maybe this weekend, my friends. Check superbuzzy if you have a chance.

when clowns go to Japan

Pardon me for being remiss in blogging, but it’s been a rather chaotic week filled with many tasks to accomplish. One of the things I’ve been working on is trying to come up with a pair of all-purpose shoes to wear to Japan–some that will go with both pants and skirts and can go for miles and miles without crippling me. I tried on a bunch of “comfort” shoes, but none of them were particularly comfortable. I finally ended up ordering some shoes from Zappos.

My very first pair of Danskos! I’m still unsure of them. They aren’t THAT comfy, really, and they’re kind of heavy. I think I will definitely trip in them. Oh well.
I finally managed to complete my very first cross stitch project!
superbuzzy crossstitch.JPG
I have no idea if I did it correctly, but it was pretty fun. This is from the cross stitch kits we have on superbuzzy. They are great little kits, fully equipped with everything you need to get started–a needle, embroidery thread, the canvas tape, and the patterns.
Here’s a closeup of a couple of the designs:

And speaking of superbuzzy, we just got in a few new fabrics. Some have French text on them and cute little designs. Here’s an example:

This one comes in three colorways.
Also, I don’t mean to be a tease, but rumor has it some hedgehogs are coming in! Now, the shop will remain open while Kelly and I are in Japan (November 2-12), but nothing will ship until the week of November 13th.
Okay then, it’s time for bed! Good night!

the champion of fungi

matsutake.JPG
Behold the matsutake, also known as the pine mushroom. It is a delicacy in Japan and probably elsewhere. When I was a kid, we used to go matsutake hunting up on Mt. Hood. They have been overpicked over the years and are now extremely scarce. I used to love cutting them up and sauteeing them in buttah. Yum. My mother gave me this one, and I added it to pasta along with garlic, olive oil, a bit of buttah, and I don’t know what else, ham?

apron au play

Hey! I finally managed to find some time to sew up an apron for Larissa and her fundraiser for Cafe au Play, the family-friendly community coffeehouse she is helping get established.

I hope someone likes it enough to bid on it at the auction. I used some lovely fabric from superbuzzy, of course, and I just kind of made up the pattern. The ruffle is kind of crazy, but I wanted the apron to be flirty and fun. Maybe I have just lost all touch with reality.
