java slush

My friend Wendy recently raved about the slushy cold coffee drinks at Dutch Bros. Coffee. Now, I am not a complete coffee know-it-all or anything, but I pride myself on being somewhat aware of what is going on in the local coffee world. I had never heard of this Dutch Bros. place. I looked it up, and heck, they are all out in the ‘burbs! Well, today I happened to be out in the ‘burbs of Gresham*, and you can bet I stopped at Dutch Bros.

The building was a little, nondescript drive-thru on a random corner, but lo and behold, there were cars lined up, and the two baristas were hipster dudes. The slushy drink is called a “Dutch Freeze,” and yes, it was quite delicious. I only had a few sips, since it is dangerous to drive while drinking these iced slushy drinks (I don’t know about you, but I am prone to brain freeze, and that makes my vision blur). When I got home I shared it with Peter, who kind of grabbed it and ran away. I went to an estate sale, and when I got back, he told me Deedle knocked over the cup, and he had to throw it away. There is no moral to this story.
*No offense to Gresham or its residents

the land of the rising sun

Okay, so the REASON I am going crazy is because KELLY AND I ARE GOING TO JAPAN IN TWO WEEKS!!!!!! We are hoping to find amazing products for superbuzzy! I have been to Japan a number of times, but what’s funny is each time I get back, I always think I’ll never have another opportunity to go. This chance came up suddenly and very quickly, so Kelly and I are going a little nutty trying to plan.
We will be in Tokyo and perhaps Osaka. I am pretty unfamiliar with Tokyo, so I’m a little freaked out (but in a good way). If you have any suggestions or tips or any words of advice, please share! We’ll be looking for fabrics primarily, but you also know that I am a big food freak, and I know Kelly is as obsessed with matcha-flavored items as I am, so any food suggestions would be most welcome as well. Also, if anyone wants to meet up, please leave a comment!

muffins or cupcakes?

I am going crazy, but that has nothing to do with these Snickers & Peanut Butter Muffins I made. I read about these muffins somewhere, and what’s not to like? I had to make them!

snickers muffin.JPG
I thought they would be more cupcake-like than muffinish, but really, they are more like muffins. Perhaps some chocolate frosting would alter them a bit. They actually weren’t as peanut buttery as I would have liked, but I think with some tinkering these could be really delicious.
Read on for the recipe!

another shop update!

Woohoo! Kelly and her very patient husband Jerry worked all weekend upgrading superbuzzy! She also added a bunch of new inventory plus some restocked items, so please go check it out. I hope you all like everything so much that you decided to drop wads of cash, because, well, we just bought a new car today, and we need to pay it off! I’ll try to have photos of various stuff tomorrow. It has been quite a long day.

hey cupcake!

My pal Megan (that’s cancer-fighting Megan to you long-time readers, assuming there are any!) told me the cupcakes at Trader Joe’s are really tasty, so of course I had to try them.

tjcupcakes.JPG
She was largely influenced by the colors of the sprinkles, since they are not your run-of-the-mill pastels.

The sort of sage green sprinkles? Megan claims those are the tastiest. I must confess that I did not taste the sprinkles individually, so I have no opinion on this matter. The cakes are dense yet moist and have a nice vanilla flavor. The frosting was more buttery than cream cheesy, and that was not particularly pleasing to me, since I have finally come to terms with the fact that I am not really a buttercream gal. Too buttery = ick. Bump up the cream cheese factor, and these would be super duper tasty!

ready for halloween

After many, many years, one of my dreams has come true–I have always wanted to give away full-size candy bars for Halloween. As long as I have been of candy-giving age, I have either lived where no child in his or her right mind would ever be or where we had hundreds of ravenous trick-or-treaters. This will be our second Halloween here in Portland, and based on last year’s tally, I decided we could afford the big ones.

If I see any returns, though, I am taking away the candy! Ah, who am I kidding? I am pretty oblivious. If the same kid came five times I probably wouldn’t even notice. So anyway, you Portlanders with kids who know where I live? FULL-SIZE CANDY BARS. Bring ’em on (but I only have 90. After 90 the lights are going off!).

superbuzzy update

Hello all! Just wanted to let you know that Kelly is going to be working on an upgrade to the superbuzzy site, so if you try to visit but can’t, it’s because Kelly is making vast improvements to the functionality of the site. Shortly following the upgrade will be yet another update. We got in a bunch of new fabrics as well as some restocks (remember those cute birds and trees?), so stay tuned, and thanks!

wee vest

So in my sewing frenzy over the weekend, I also made a little vest for little Paulina and a matching skirt for her sister Lillie. Little P is a rather exuberant child, and it was difficult to get her to stand still for the photo shoot:

The vest is lined with the dancing bear flannel from superbuzzy. I put snaps on it because I thought that would be fun as well as funny, and I also stuck on a little pocket for her treasures. I have a skirt made of the brown corduroy strawberry fabric, too, so I suppose Little P, Lillie, and I should go out for ice cream or something in our matching duds.
Next up? I went to Fabric Depot bright and early on Saturday and bought fabric for yet ANOTHER skirt plus pants (a Built by Wendy pattern). I also plan to make an apron for Larissa‘s fundraiser. Do you know about that? She is involved with Cafe au Play, a family-friendly, community coffeehouse. They’re having a fundraiser in November, and they are going to auction off handmade aprons. If you would like to donate an apron, please contact Larissa!

and round and round we go

I went on a bit of a sewing hiatus. I thought about sewing, but I just wasn’t motivated to physically engage in it. Luckily, I kicked that malaise this weekend.

circle skirt.JPG
The pattern is from the latest Japanese sewing book I got, another skirt book, but this one is not by Machiko Kayaki. I used a heavy black rayon, and the skirt is cut on the bias, so it drapes pretty nicely. The skirt in the book isn’t lined, but I decided to line it so I can wear it in the winter with tights (the lining is bright turquoise!). I spent Saturday afternoon embroidering those circles. I’m not very adept at handwork, so let’s just say my circles are a bit on the, ahem, primitive side.
