and it’s back to the dish soap aprons

I sewed up some new dish soap aprons last night:

dish soap aprons.JPG
I decided that I don’t really enjoy sewing up these little aprons, because I’m not so good at tiny stuff. However, I do like aproned dish soap better than nekkid soap, so there you go.
And I’m probably the last to know about the Polaroid-o-nizer, but how cool is it?
Peter and pastrami.jpg
There’s Peter enjoying a sandwich from the Pastrami King at the Hillsdale Farmers’ Market. I found out about the Polaroid-o-nizer from Anh-Minh‘s blog. I always learn about the greatest stuff from her site!
And lastly, I am FINALLY working on a new banner. This has proven very difficult, since I can’t do a thing in Photoshop or Illustrator. My little super eggplant hero from my old banner came from Jessica‘s husband Wes, and I love that little guy, but I thought a new banner would be a nice change. So, for all you graphic experts out there, can you tell me how to get rid of those little white triangles at the outer edges of the banner? Should I just eliminate the purple background and go with white? What do y’all think?
Peter and I are headed up to Washington for a couple days, but we’ll be back Wednesday evening. Betcha can’t wait, ha ha. Maybe I’ll find some green shoes or a full slip up there, or at least some Swedish meatballs …

I need green shoes

I realized the other day that I have several pieces of green fabric designated for clothing. I think I need some green shoes to go with them, don’t you? Here’s the first completed piece of green apparel:

green dress.JPG
Yup, it’s another item from the Machiko Kayaki Home Couture book. I used cotton fabric from the Aunt Gracie’s line. It fits pretty well, but the cotton sticks to my underwear! I guess I need a slip? I am so clueless when it comes to undergarments, so if you have any tips, please feel free to leave them!
Here’s a closeup of the fabric and the buttons I used:

norwegian goodies

Cecilie from Norway sent me the most incredible package. I had never before received a package from Norway, but I think this was definitely worth the wait!

That last photo shows a little eggplant kit of green and purple beads, embroidery thread, and felt. Cecilie also sent some little tiny eggplant heat transfers. As you might imagine, the candy selection is amazing. So far I’ve tried only the kit kat-like candy. Mmmm. The gummis she sent are in the shapes of ladies and skiiers! Only in Norway. I’m not sure what to do with that great piece of fabric. Maybe a wall hanging or a tote? Danke! Merci! Arigato! How do I say THANK YOU in Norwegian!?!
In other news, I finished a dress a couple days ago, but it’s been too cloudy or too cold to photograph it. Maybe tomorrow …

get back tack cat

That title is supposed to be a play on that Elton John song, which I swear has the lyrics, “Get back, honky cat.” Is that right, or am I projecting something from my dark side? Anyway, I think my back-tack project has made it to its recipient, so I reckon it’s safe to show you the kitty I made.

bt kitty w deedle.JPGbt kitty from back.JPG
Don’t worry, I didn’t really let Deedle touch it or anything. The pointy kitty is a free pattern by Hillary. I also made an accompanying tote bag, but I neglected to take photos of it. For the kitty, I pieced together a bunch of different black & white fabric strips to give it a quilty effect, but I don’t know if it actually looks very quilty. I never make softies or do handwork, so back-tack was a great opportunity to do something new and different, and I really enjoyed participating in it. My horizons have been expanded!

sorry, I’ve got nothing

It was a busy weekend, but unfortunately I didn’t get any crafting accomplished. Saturday Peter and I went to the ballet! We saw the Oregon Ballet Theatre production of Swan Lake. It was quite impressive and very enjoyable. I did have a senior moment where I totally did the nod-and-bob sleep thing during Act III, but I don’t think I missed anything critical.
Sunday was a gorgeous day. I stopped by my parents’ house, and my mother and brother were outside doing yardwork.

My mother looked pretty cute in her gardening garb.
Peter and I also went sailing with our friends the Slabs. It was HOT out there on the river. We went under the bridge that connects Oregon and Washington, and even though the pilings are pretty far apart, it was still a tad nervewracking.

Please note the vein bulging out of Peter’s neck.
It’s now time to eat some Hood strawberries with vanilla ice cream, so I’ll catch you on the flip side.

minnesota: gummi state

Thank you, Tooth Carrie, for introducing me to all the delights of Minnesota candy manufacturer Fritzie Fresh.

gummi crawlers.JPG
I’m telling you, the Fritzie Fresh gummi brite crawlers are the best gummi worms I’ve ever had. They have the perfect texture and bite to them. Tooth Carrie just sent me a package of the gummi squigglies, and I was a little skeptical at first, since I didn’t think any gummi could surpass the wonder of the gummi brite crawler, but hey, they are really stinkin’ good! Right now you can buy a box of the gummi brite crawlers, and some of the proceeds go to hurricane relief (I wonder if I can write them off?). Candy + charitable work = you just can’t go wrong.
And speaking of candy, my brother recently visited Boston and had a really great time! Who’d have thunk? I had only one request for him: to bring me back some LA Burdick chocolates if he happened to be in Harvard Square. He did, and I got chocolate.

I just noticed on the web site that they have macarons! I guess my brother will just have to scamper on back to Boston to get me some.
Have a good weekend, everyone!

it’s stencil time

as opposed to hammer time. Heh. Anyone remember that? “Can’t touch this.” Ha ha ha. Anyway, I went over to Melissa‘s yesterday for some freezer paper stencil fun. I also coerced her into making me lunch and feeding me Hood strawberries with ice cream. I also used her ink and other stenciling supplies. Yeah, I’m an excellent guest.
Anyway, I am quite pleased with my first shirt, even though the lettering is kind of doofy:

ohmygodshirt.JPG
I ripped off the design from one of my Japanese “I Love T-shirt” books. Something about it cracks me up. It also illustrates why I don’t go swimming around in the ocean.
The second shirt is quite indisputably a hands-down failure. It screams, “Made by someone with absolutely no artistic ability whatsoever.” It also confirms that I should continue stealing other people’s ideas rather than going for something original. I’m going to show it to you anyway.
flat white shirt front.JPGflat white shirt back.JPG
The “flat white” part will most likely only make sense to Australians and coffee drinkers who have traveled to parts Down Under. It was my beverage of choice during our recent trip there. Why don’t they have flat whites here, I ask? But back to the shirt. So cheesy, but at least I used an old shirt that I normally wear underneath sweaters and also, yes, fleeces, so the evidence of my craftin’-gone-bad will remain hidden (unless I get really, really hot).

pie for me

Can you all keep a secret? Yesterday I went over to Amy‘s to “help” her with mailorder preparations. Well, I think she got the raw end of the deal. I mean, not only did I get fed delicious banh mi sandwiches for dinner, but I also got an entire homemade rhubarb pie! The amount of work I put in was worth maybe two bites of sandwich! The pie is delicious, and all I want to do is eat it all day long.

Mmmmmm, pie.

Oh, some of you asked about the Machiko Kayaki book. The ISBN is 4-579-10875-2. You can maybe order it from Kinokuniya or definitely from Amazon Japan or YesAsia. In my opinion, all her books are really stellar.

blouse central

Okay, so I have been a little fixated on sewing lately, and my poor knitting has fallen by the wayside, but hey, when the motivation hits, ya gotta go with it! I managed to make another blouse from the wonderful Machiko Kayaki home couture book:

machiko yellow blouse.JPG
I bet many of you recognize the fabric. I had to get a little creative again with this blouse, but I’m still amazed at how these Japanese patterns just fit. It’s almost like magic! I love the Peter Pan collar and the little darts in the sleeves (which you can’t see in the photo). Next up is a dress from the book (I actually started cutting out the dress but realized I didn’t have enough fabric. Ergh).
