backtack snacks

Saturday I’m hosting a party/open house for local participants of Back-tack 3 (Back-tack is essentially a crafty swap). I am looking forward to it, but the last time I had an open house? I baked for a week, and on the day of the party there was a torrential storm, and only a couple people came.
But anyway, I baked and baked today. I was hoping to have lots of delicious food to distract guests from noticing how scary and weird our house is. Now, I know I talk about food and baking all the time, but to be perfectly honest, I am not a naturally talented cook. I am a follower of directions. Today I followed directions, but I also had to improvise quite a bit.
First up was the most successful baked good of the day: icebox shortbread from Martha. I split the dough in half and made earl grey and currant from one half and matcha with the other half. I kind of went nuts with the matcha, so only the matcha-brave should try them:

I then made a couple batches of gougeres, one with gruyere and one with red bell pepper. I overbaked the gruyere batch, and the red pepper one was so runny I had to use a mini muffin tin!

Next I started to make the Daniel Boulud Chocolate Coffee Cupcakes with Mocha Ganache and Mascarpone Cream (I KNOW, can you believe how yummy that sounds?) that I read about here and here, but I already screwed them up. I overfilled the cupcake liners, leaving NO ROOM for the mocha ganache. So, I guess I’ll skip the ganache and just pipe on the mascarpone cream.
On a positive note, however, Alison, one of the lovely hostesses of Back-tack, sent an incredible party package from Australia, so we shall not go hungry at the party!

I am equally excited about this variety pack of Thomas Kemper sodas:

take 20

So I haven’t blogged about candy in a while. Candyswappers is still happening, and I’m in the midst of sending out all the swap partner info now. I got all confused by my database, so my brother took pity on me and wrote a little program to simplify things. It is still not simple in my brain, though.
Anyway, I wanted to tell you about this FREE CANDY I got:

take 5.JPG
A bunch (20, to be exact) of tiny Take 5 candy bars. I got these through BzzAgent, a company that recruits suckers agents like me to spread the buzz about various products. It’s all about product marketing, but you see, I love new products and free stuff, so it’s right up my alley! I’m not sure if the Take 5 promotion is ongoing, but if you want free candy to taste and share with your friends, take a look at BzzAgent. As for the Take 5 bar, can you believe I had never had once before these arrived? They are pretty tasty, but I think I could live without the pretzel in there.

sailing skirt

Okay, can you believe I finished sewing my skirt?

beach skirt.JPG
Am I on a roll now, or will I not make anything for another few months as a result of exhausting myself? The fabric is from the Heather Ross “Lightning Bugs” collection. It has sailboats and people hanging out on the beach on it. The skirt is essentially a combination of patterns from some of my Japanese skirt books. I even lined the thing so I won’t have to worry too much if I wear hot pink underwear! Now I just need proper footwear and some shirts.
As for the freezer paper stenciling, you can find good info, as usual, on Amy’s post here. There’s also a flickr group dedicated to freezer paper stencils here. You can find freezer paper at your better-stocked grocery stores and fabric paint at your local craft store. I used cheap Tulip fabric paint from Michael’s.

you say porcupine, I say hedgehog

Following the dearth of crafting over the weekend, I kind of lost my mind and decided I just really needed to make SOMETHING. I’m currently working on a skirt (though I’m afraid it’s going to be a little snug around the middle. Oh well, it’s not like I’m going to give up sweets), and this morning, in lieu of my run (hence the tightness around my middle!), I jumped on the freezer paper stenciling bandwagon and made this:

hedgehog shirt.JPG
There’s a special spot in my heart for the hedgehog, as the stuffed version is Deedle’s ultimate toy.
Here’s a closeup:

Peter thought it was a porcupine. Hmph.

another craftless weekend

I had grand plans to sew all sorts of things this weekend, but I did not sew one stitch, nor did I knit a stitch! It was still a nice weekend, though. The weather here was gorgeous, and we spent most of it getting Peter’s sailboat onto the water. Now, sailing has always been Peter’s thing. I get seasick just thinking about ocean swells, but rivers I might be able to handle!
Here’s the boat at the launch ramp on the Columbia River:

And finally on the water!

Her maiden voyage, motoring to her slip:

And finally in her slip!

Now Peter just has to figure out how to sail her. She is a catboat (not to be confused with catamaran), which means she has just one giant sail.
I really need to sew something one of these days, though.

so happy together

I’m starting to develop a system now for making these little otama guys …

I asked my mother what an otama is, and she said it means “ball” or something like that. Does anyone else out there know?

otama life

Hey, those otama things are much easier to make than the crochet kitties! I whipped one out yesterday evening. Now I want to make a whole fleet of them!

Work on the driveway continues, much to Deedle’s dismay. I had to go pick up lumber today, and she was so calm when I left that I thought she’d be fine with the guys working near the house. When I got home, though, I found the curtain rod yanked from the wall and a huge tear in our month-old curtain. I’m hoping to get those repaired before the backtack party next weekend. I mean, the house is trashy enough as it is without ripped curtains hanging lopsidedly from the wall!

trio of crafting books

I went to Kinokuniya the other day. I hadn’t been out there or purchased any Japanese crafting books for a long while, so I guess I was due. I frantically sifted through the books (I was with my mother, and I didn’t want to make her wait for hours), and while having lunch at the adjacent Japanese restaurant (Hakatamon–best udon noodles in town), I narrowed down my choices. I came home with three books:
OTAMA LIFE

ISBN: 4-04-853744-X
This is a totally random book full of these little crocheted round things in strange locations and poses. There’s something really appealing about that to me. Check them out:

otama 5.JPGotama 4.JPG
I mean, look at that one where the otama is wearing a wig! How crazy is that? I really need to make myself some of these otama dealies.
The other two books are about embroidery. I must have some fantasy about embroidering. It’s completely delusional, because I don’t embroider and probably never will, but hey, a gal’s gotta have dreams, right?
Design Collection for Kids:

ISBN: 4-529-04204-9
Very cute designs and good graphic explanations of how to do the stitches (imperative for a non-embroiderer like me):

My mother thought I should limit myself to just one embroidery book, but I think you can see why I could not choose between them! Here’s one final otama shot for you:

fabby vintage fabs

So the other day when my mother and I were digging around for her button box, we came across some old fabric she had stuffed into a drawer. It’s pretty vintage, from the 1960s and 1970s! My mother did a lot of sewing back then. It’s pretty cool looking at her handmade patterns and all.
A smattering of fabric scraps:

I also found this cool pattern that looks rather smocklike. I kind of want to make it, but I’m afraid it would look like a maternity outfit. Also, you can see that my mother even kept the shopping bags. I think Discount Fabrics closed down decades ago!
mom simplicity pattern.JPGmom discount fabric bag.JPG

And finally, this morning work began on our driveway installation. It’s a big, noisy job, and Deedle was freaked out pretty much the whole day. The neighbor also freaked out and now seems ti hates us. Maybe I should give him a pink cookie?

Sanford & Son, Japanese style

I was over at my parents’ house today, and I asked my mother if she still had her button box. My intent, of course, was to steal it. We started looking for it and in the process unearthed some other relics, including a bunch of Japanese embroidery thread:

My mother used to do a lot of tatting (or maybe it’s just tiny crocheting), and she tried to pawn off that thread and such on me, but I told her I can’t tat or crochet. Maybe I can have her show me before we both get too ancient. She also used to bead. We had a good laugh over some giant beaded rings she made, but I took one and wore it all day!

Oh, and we did finally find the button box:

I also found some vintage fabric scraps, and we went to Kinokuniya, where I purchased three Japanese craft books, so hey, there’s fodder for tomorrow’s post!
