get the stink out

Those of you who exercise or generally sweat a lot can probably relate to this: you know how your exercise apparel seems clean and fresh after you wash it, but as soon as you start to sweat, it gets that … odor? Well, no more! I read about this super fantabulous detergent that specifically targets and kills the nasty bacteria that makes clothes stinky!

It’s called Win Detergent, and it’s available online. I haven’t tried it yet because I am kind of hoarding it for the moment. I think this weekend, though, I’m breaking out ALL the exercise gear and washing it. I am za winner!

mmmmmm, pie

Who doesn’t love a good piece of pie?

I love cafeteria-style establishments. These pies plus fresh strawberry shortcake are available at Tebo’s in Gladstone, Oregon.

the land of pink cookies

I went to Spokane, Washington, for the weekend with my mother. My cousin’s daughter (i.e., my mother’s brother’s granddaughter) is spending a semester abroad (she is Japanese), and this somehow landed her in Spokane. We actually have ties to Spokane–my father’s cousin lives there. Anyway, I discovered the wonders of cruise control, the weather was great, and it was nice to see the family. Here’s my mother and the cousin’s daughter at breakfast:

And of course no trip to Spokane would be complete without some of the Rocket Bakery’s pink cookies!

cookies!

My tea sweets from Amai Tea & Bake House arrived today! So far I have sampled the earl grey & currant and the matcha. Both really flavorful and delicious! The packaging is very elegant and appealing.

They are taking orders until April 30, so you still have a couple days.
I’m headed out of town for the weekend, so I will leave you with this quote from Rousseau: “Little girls always dislike learning to read and write, but they are always ready to learn to sew.”

I’m with dummy

Melissa and I have been working on our duct tape dress forms for the last couple of weekends. I finally finished mine today!

dummy.JPG
It’s not perfect, but I think it will be useful, and it seems to have the correct measurements. It’s kind of hard to tell the back from the front, since I don’t really have the frontal protrusions that most women have!
Here’s the back side:

Ha ha ha, it’s just a barrel of fun over here!

oh no, another project

frostline.JPG
Back in the day there was a company called Frostline Kits. They sold patterns and kits for outdoor clothing and gear, and they even had stores where you could go and sew up your stuff. My mother was crazy about Frostline, and she made down booties, down vests, rain parkas, and backpacks for us. Sadly, Frostline now seems to be nonexistent, but wouldn’t you know, once in a while the kits show up on ebay!
Today my Frostline stuff arrived, and it was WAY more than I expected. I thought I was just getting patterns for a women’s vest and a men’s jacket, but no, they are complete kits, and there’s also a kit for a stuff sack plus thread, labels, scraps of ripstop nylon, all kinds of stuff. I haven’t even gone through the whole box yet. Clearly someone was trying to clean up the basement. Well, now it’s going to sit in my basement along with all my other projects! Must. Get. Motivated.

brownie cupcakes

brownie cupcake.JPG
I have always loved cupcakes, even when they weren’t trendy. Today I baked Brownie Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Frosting. I had cut out the recipe from Bon Appetit in 2003 but just got around to making them. The cake part is dense and chewy, and the peanut butter frosting was not overly sweet. Yummy with vanilla ice cream and a mug of coffee.
Read on for the recipe …

and now the weekend is over

It was a truly glorious weekend here in the Pacific Northwest. It was the first weekend this year with 70+ degree weather, and let me tell you, when you live in a rainy and dark place, people FREAK when the sun comes out. It was great. Of course, for part of it I was stuck indoors as a volunteer at the Wordstock Festival. It was totally worth it and fun, so I’m not complaining. I bought only one book there, one that was on my wish list anyway. The funny thing was the author was speaking when I bought the book, but I didn’t have a chance to stop and listen! Anyway, so far it’s a great read: The Last Season by Eric Blehm.
Then today Melissa and I went to Fabric Depot for some supplies, and when I was grabbing embroidery floss for the needle punch kits that I decided I had to have, even though I need another hobby like I need a hole in the head, oh, wait, I probably HAVE a hole in my head, which is why I do irrational and idiotic things like buy needle punch kits that I will most likely never even open, Melissa yelled from a couple rows down, “THEY HAVE PHILDAR HERE!” Yes, indeed, Fabric Depot has a small, but very tangible and real, selection of Phildar:

It includes Phil Eponge and Aviso. Fair dinkum, maties.

word

vegemite.JPG
Saturday I am volunteering at the Wordstock Festival. I don’t know much about it except that it is a big book festival featuring lots of amazing authors (including Steve Almond of Candyfreak fame as well as the one-and-only Dave Eggers and the notorious Chuck Barris of the Gong Show [and maybe even the CIA, if you believe everything you read]). I’m helping at the information booth (I know, ironic, considering I know nothing) from 1:30-5pm, so stop and say hey if you’re there and feel like it.
*I realize Vegemite and Wordstock have nothing in common, but I like to include photos with my posts. Speaking of Vegemite, what is it with this stuff? I thought I might like it, but I put a teeny little smear on the edge of an English muffin the other day, and whoah but it almost knocked me out! That stuff is strong and salty! Is it really meant to be consumed on bread?

back-tackers of the rose city, unite!

I did it; I signed up for back-tack III.

Backtack.jpg
I never even tried to sign up for the other back-tacks because I was intimidated by all the crafting talent and also because I’m kind of slow on the go. This time, however, I decided to throw caution to the wind and go for it.
But anyway, the back-tack blog indicated that every blogger in Portland is participating in back-tack III, which got me thinking–how about a back-tack crafting extravaganza one day in May? I don’t even know if any of the Portland back-tackers know who I am, but I’m guessing we can get the word out somehow. I would be happy to host the pah-tee, and I will of course provide snacks and treats. Is there any interest out there?
