how many days this month can I post about cookies?

I have long been fixated on finding sweet treats and recipes that include black or green tea as ingredients, so I was thrilled when Amai Tea & Bake House decided to offer their tea sweets cookies for sale online. Take a look (disclaimer: I stole this photo from Amai):

amaiteasweets.jpg
They are available until the end of April. I am especially looking forward to sampling the earl grey & currant and of course green tea!
I don’t know if you remember, but around Christmas I ordered champagne brownies from Amai. It was their first online offering. The bakery was founded about a year ago by Kelli and Kathryn (an Aussie!). I was a reader of Kelli’s blog before she quit her day job to pursue her dream as bakery owner; thus, I feel like I’ve been there through the big life transition and am fiercely supportive of her. Of course, it’s not much of a challenge since she is so talented and keeps baking delicious goodies that I would kill for, anyway.

where in the world is berkeley?

b500.JPG
The basenji 500

Some of you have expressed interest in the fate of Berkeley. We had Berkeley for nearly two months, yet he and Deedle continued to have issues. He would incessantly harass her, and she would get ticked off. There was a lot of snarking. I thought I could figure out a way to help them overcome their differences, and I was ready to seek outside help, but then I went on vacation and left Peter to deal with the disgruntled duo. In addition to driving one another crazy, they drove Peter crazy. He called BRAT (Basenji Rescue and Transport, a really great organization. In fact, we adopted Deedle through BRAT), and they immediately set up a meeting and a drop-off, and it was bye bye, Berkeley.
I called Berkeley’s foster mother when I got back from Australia, and I learned he is doing well and will soon be rehomed to a home with no other pets. He is a good little guy, but he had never had any training, and he was pretty undisciplined and wild. We were committed to keeping him, but unfortunately, the situation was getting almost dangerous for Deedle. I feel pretty guilty about it, but you know, I look at Deedle now, and she is so happy to be rid of Berkeley that I don’t feel as badly as I probably should!

what I did on easter

1. I slept in, WAY in.
2. I thought about running, but I just went for a short run with Peter & Deedle instead (you’ll note that I did not mention Berkeley. That’s because I got home from Australia to a one-dog household).
3. I thought about making a Peeps Pie, but I was short on Peeps. I know, it’s a tragedy.
4. I sewed! I actually sewed! I made a tote for Bean, something I should have made, oh, a year ago.

tote for bean.JPG

5. I also sewed a zabuton (seat cushion) cover, but you don’t want to see it.
6. I listened to a podcast of Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me, a hilarious game broadcast on NPR.
7. I opened a package of Tim Tams in latte flavor. They are pretty tasty.
8. I finally put up some pictures in my office!
9. For dinner we went to Burgerville, a local fast-food chain that actually uses real ingredients, and had the seasonal strawberry smoothies with our burgers. Mmmmmm.

breaking tim tam news

timtams.JPG

VERY EGG-SIGHTING NEWS for all you US-based Tim Tam lovers out there! Lori mentioned that Cost Plus World Market purportedly sells Tim Tams, so I immediately got on the horn and called our local store for further information. IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED. The store DOES carry Arnott’s Tim Tams, but they are sold under a different name. I don’t know what this other name is, but heck, just look for the package with the chocolate-covered biscuits. Apparently it is not out of the norm for Tim Tams to sport pseudonyms. Read about that here. If you are clamoring for the special Tim Tam flavors, you are in luck. There are several vendors in the US that offer Aussie goodies, including About Australia. They also carry Smith’s potato chips (Carolyn‘s favorite) and Cheezels.

anatomy of a cookie

Cookie aficionados, Carolyn and I need your help. While browsing through the incredible food court in Aussie department store David Jones, we came upon a delectable cookie–the brandy snap creme cookie. Apparently it is a secret recipe by the Cookie Man. I know it’s secret because I wrote to them to beg for the recipe.

MELBOURNE 6 David Jones brandy snap creme cookie.JPG
The cookie part was crisp and crunchy without being hard (probably because it has about 10 pounds of butter in each cookie). I have searched for recipes, but all the brandy snap cookie recipes I’ve found have been for the rolled cookie. I suppose you could just skip the rolling part, right? The filling was no namby whipped filling; it was dense and substantive and very creamy. We would like to replicate this cookie as closely as possible, but we need your help. Any ideas? Suggestions? Guesses? All you Aussies out there should go running to your closest David Jones or Cookie Man!

fabulous fabs

So Carolyn and I did no knitting whatsoever during our trip to Australia. This does not mean, however, that the trip was completely craftless. We went to a fabric store in Sydney and peered into windows of ribbon and button shops (they were all closed, or shut, if you are Australian). We also went to a cute fabric shop in Darwin, and when we reached Melbourne we happened upon a really great fabric store: Patchwork on Central Park. They were very nice in there, and the owner even let me snap a photo of her:

The shop had, pant pant, Japanese imports. I restrained myself (I’m not telling about Carolyn) and just got a few small pieces:

Can you see the mushrooms on the pink and green fabric? I had to get the crocodile one, of course, since Australia is known for all their crocs. Now, what to make?

happy birthday, sashi

Today is my crazy brother‘s birthday. If you have the time and the inclination, please go harass him.

a dingo ate my baby

Yes, we did see some dingos! I guess there were wallabys hopping about, too, but I always just missed them. And did you know that parrots just fly around Australia like they are normal, everyday birds? Yes, it’s an amazing country!
Anyway, I need to get back to knitting, so I’m wondering if anyone out there has one or two balls of Lion Brand Cotton-Ease in banana cream (or maybe mint, though I think I’d prefer banana cream) that they want to sell? Merci!

back from oz

I have returned from down undah! Carolyn and I visited every climate known to Australia, I think, and we have peeling sunburns to prove it. I don’t want to bore you all with too many details, so here are some highlights and discoveries and observations:
1. I took a lot of random photos at first, but then I stopped. I am sad about this, because I love the random photos.

2. You have to love a country that puts beets on their burgers.
3. Australians love banana-flavored things. It seemed every restaurant had banana bread, banana muffins, banana pancakes, banana ice cream, you name it. Starbucks even had a banana frappuccino. Carolyn tried it and said it tasted like banana cream pie.
4. We met Alison on our first day in Sydney, and she showed us all around (CBD, King Street, Doyle’s for fish & chips, and more). We had a wonderful time, and Alison is great, of course. She gave us this giant box of Aussie treats:
SYDNEY 10 candies from Alison.JPG

5. We also met Sydney foodblogger Clare. She took us on a drive down the coast, which was gorgeous. She also took us to a wildlife park where we got to feed the kangaroos and pet the koalas!
SYDNEY 19 Symbio koala.JPG

We were fortunate enough to meet her partner Casey, who quickly became our hero. We quoted him throughout our trip (his sayings are a tad too colorful to share on the blog). Hey Clare, we agree wholeheartedly with your parents–Casey is wonderful! He can do no wrong!
6. Everyone in Australia says “no worries.” They do not, however, according to Alison, call one another “mate” very often. They also say, “How ya goin'” a lot. Portable coolers are referred to as “eskies.”
7. Carolyn became addicted to Anzac biscuits. She also has a bit of a book-buying disorder. This is only a sampling of the books she purchased:
MELBOURNE 7 C books.JPG

8. Qantas loves to feed people. Even on short flights of 90 minutes or so, Qantas gave us full meals!
9. Life-changing discoveries: eye masks and fly nets. The eye masks really did block out the light on the airplane, and the fly nets were an absolute necessity in Uluru, where black flies swarmed around us during daylight:
ULURU 4 C and me with fly nets.JPG

10. The Great Barrier Reef is like a giant aquarium. We were stupid enough to think we didn’t need to go out to the reef while in Cairns (hello, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef), since neither of us are big water people, but we decided to take a boat trip out there anyway, mostly to kill time, and then we realized what idiots we were. We didn’t get any good fish photos, but here’s the view from the boat to Green Island, Queensland’s first island national park:
CAIRNS 22 green island another beach.JPG

11. Why don’t they sell Solo or Lift lemon drinks in the US?
Solo_drink_Australia.jpg

12. Neither Carolyn nor I knit one stinkin’ stitch during our vacation, but we did read (my 2 books to Carolyn’s oh, I dunno, dozen).
13. Tim Tams. Sigh. How I love them.
14. Awesome tea shop: T2 Tea.
Okay, maties, that’s it for now!

and I’m off to see the wizard

This is my final blog post before I take off for parts down undah! I won’t be blogging for the next two weeks, but I swear that when I return, I’m going to start sewing and crafting with much vigor. Really.
So here’s some random stuff before I go. Someone asked what the inside of the fair isle sweater looks like. Well, it looks like this:

And no pre-vacation post would be complete without a photo of a cupcake, would it? My friend Wendy & I had a great lunch the other day at the Bakery Bar here in Portland. We had tasty panini sandwiches (turkey with caramelized pear and Dijon) and for dessert I got a devil’s food cupcake to go. Nice packaging!

See ya in April!
