good mail

I guess starting candyswappers has paid off, because I had a good mail day the other day! I got candy from my candyswap partner, and I also got a crocheted bunny clutching an eggplant.

Isn’t he cute? The talented and thoughtful Stephanie sent him to me. The pattern and other goodies are for sale at her shop. Go check them out!
And my candyswap buddy Erin sent me some treats from Michigan (the first candyswap had a regional theme):

It’s a really nice assortment of chocolates! I think this first swap has been pretty successful. We had more than 100 participants, and from what I can tell so far, people are happy with their candy loot!

happy spring

My mother’s birthday coincides with the first day of spring. I decided to bake her a cake, because I now live in the same city as she does! At first I was going to make a lemon layer cake, but then I figured I should make something unavailable at bakeries. I ended up making a matcha mousse cake.

For the cake I modified Alice Medrich’s recipe for Hot Milk Sponge Cake. It’s from her book Cocolat, which unfortunately is out of print. I’d love a copy of it, but it costs about $80! Anyway, I managed to find the recipe online (I found it here, and you should click on that link just to see the beautiful cake). The filling is a matcha mousse from Rose Levy Beranbaum’s Cake Bible.
Read on for the recipe!

fair play

I bet you all thought I moved to Portland and stopped knitting/sewing/crafting, didn’t you? Well, you might not be so far off–I’ve slowed down a bit, but I’m still at it, and I managed to finish my fair isle vest!

It was my first fair isle project, so I am pretty happy with the results. I used KnitPicks Merino Style yarn. I think I ordered about 12 skeins? Actually, I think I ended up using 10, because I found 2 unused skeins at the bottom of my knitting box. I used my knitting software to design the sweater, and the fair isle pattern is from Kiki. I highly recommend this fair isle pattern for any novice wanting to learn about fair isle.

‘Tis the season

Marshmallow Peeps are “always in season” now, but really, Easter is indisputably the ultimate season for Peeps. No other holiday comes with Peeps accessories! Today I stumbled upon the Peeps display, and it was a sight to behold. I think I might have gotten a little carried away:

And here’s a closeup of the Peeps “plush pak”:

Sigh, how I love Peeps. Peep on, peeple!
Oh, and here’s a gratuitous dog photo. Peter was watching tonight’s episode of the Dog Whisperer, and Berkeley started watching! Deedle has never watched TV, so it was a surprise when Berkeley reacted to it. Here he is enjoying the show:

we’re off to see the wizard

In a week and a half I’m going on vacation to AUSTRALIA. Can you believe it? I hardly can. I’m going with none other than Carolyn, and we are going to have ten tons of fun. We’ll be hitting Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, Darwin, and Uluru. If any of you out there have any suggestions on places to eat, shop, sightsee, run, frolic, please let me know. All I can say is these places had better stock up on Tim Tams, cuz I’m planning to clean them out.

all cookies, all the time

Saturday I accidentally went to New Seasons Market (a GREAT local market) during their cookie tasting. It was pretty amazing. They were sampling just about every variety of packaged cookie sold in the store! Here is just one table:

I tried to be good, meaning I didn’t taste every single cookie. I think the best ones were the Cougar Mountain cookies out of Seattle. Even though they are packaged cookies, they remained soft and chewy.
Cougar Mountain also makes cookie dough, and of course I had to buy a couple.

I haven’t tried them yet. So much for cutting back on sweets, eh?

dot this

I’d been looking all over town for these LED stick-on lights, and I finally found them!

Now I just have to decide where to stick them.

it’s not supposed to snow here in march

It was quite a shock when I got up this morning, pulled up the shade, and saw SNOW. It’s not really supposed to snow here at this time of year, but it did!

The dogs didn’t want to go out. Speaking of the dogs, they are doing much better, but they still don’t get along as smoothly as I’d like. I guess it will just take some time.

the scone age

Way back in the early 1990s, my friend Alice and I were a little obsessed with scones. We both had the tiny cookbook Biscuits and Scones by Elizabeth Alston, and nearly every day we would get together for scones, tea, and knitting. The book appears to be out of print now, which is a shame, because it has a ton of great yet simple recipes.
Today I dug out the cookbook and made Peggy’s Cheese Scones to go with some chicken stew. They were pretty darn tasty.

non crafty weekend

Once again I accomplished no sewing. How can that be? Saturday Melissa and I headed north. Our original intention was to go to the Sewing & Stitchery Expo in Puyallup, Washington, but we ended up going to IKEA instead. I got some much needed cheap furniture. Afterwards we went to the Great Wall Asian Mall. This was one of the stores there:

munchies paradise.JPG
Munchies Paradise! They had bins of interesting “candies” such as salted plums, dried jackfruit, and foam strawberries. Unfortunately, that was the only photo I took.
Speaking of munchies paradise, here are a few items that recently have made their way into our house:
edelweiss chocolate.JPGbobs corn chips.JPG
Chocolates from the German deli (including the new creme de cacao flavor of Ritter Sport bar) plus multi grain & seed corn chips from Bob’s Red Mill (and yes, that is a 2 pound 8 oz bag). I need to slow the flow, though–the other day Peter informed me that my pants looked tight.
