see ya in a few

Peter and I are going off to the woods and the river to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. The trouble is, we got this new dog, ya know, and can you guess who is coming over to dogsit? My insane brother. Can you guess how much he knows about dogs? About as much as I do! We grew up without any animals (except goldfish, but you couldn’t really see them because the water was too murky. I remember one time I was under the table in my little makeshift fort, making glitter pictures and listening to my cube radio, and I reached into a box of plastic toys, and I grabbed this lightweight dry thing. It took me a while to figure out it was one of our goldfish! I think it was Mr. Rourke) because we are allergic to everything.
Anyway, what’s nice about having siblings is that even if they are loony tunes, you can always impose upon them, because they are family and have no choice. Good luck, Sashi! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA.
[Please note that I am not entirely evil. I am leaving him some TimTam biscuits to enjoy.]

rubbing elbows with the stars

I finagled my way into Amy‘s house by volunteering to help stuff envelopes for her mailorder club. Aren’t I sneaky? Not only did I get to spend time with Amy and eat her delicious raspberry linzer cookies and drink her coffee, but I also got to hobnob with Alicia, the proprietress of EllaPosie, a very cute boutique here in Portland. And looky what Alicia brought us:

Spokandy! I always loved visiting the Spokandy shop in Spokane, Washington. The name and the sight of that retro logo make me smile.

and a happy valentine’s day to you

My valentine knows me pretty well:

Peter also got me a gift card for Forever 21, a store I have never visited because I haven’t been 21 in, well, FOREVER, ha ha, and the clothing there has never been on my radar (you won’t see me in any plunging necklines). I saw a cute blouse from there in Lucky Magazine, though, and I mentioned it to Peter. It was very brave and sweet of him to go there. Now I just have to muster enough courage to go and redeem the card.
The pooches are doing a bit better. Thanks to everyone who commented on that! It was really traumatic for me at first, since I know next to nothing about dogs and canine behavior. I have decided to take the existential route and to just let things be. Here they are in one peaceful moment:

the best cupcakes

I may have blogged about these cupcakes before, but if so, I still think they warrant a second post, since they are so tasty (and also because I have nothing else to blog about. Ha). They are yellow cupcakes with a chocolate ganache frosting and appeared in Cook’s Illustrated a couple years back.

They are pretty easy to whip up, so you do have time to make them for Valentine’s Day dessert if you wish.
Read on for the recipe …

super eggplant suffers from a psychotic break

Someone have me committed, please. I decided it might be nice for Deedle to have a canine companion, since her separation anxiety has been a little severe lately. I also decided she should have a basenji companion, since, well, I like basenjis. I certainly wavered and went back and forth, but then the perfect dog sort of appeared and fell into our laps. May I introduce Barkley*:

barkley going to his new home.JPG
He’s a 2-year-old brindle boy (everyone told us that having two basenji bitches was tantamount to suicide, or would that be homicide?), and he’s really a good dog. His owners decided to rehome him because they are out of town a lot, and the dog was forced to spend a lot of time by himself. He and Deedle got along fine (we met at a dog park), and they were great on the drive home (2.5 hours), but once we got inside the house (i.e., Deedle’s turf), she decided she hated him and has been horribly snarky ever since. So much for easing any sense of loneliness or anxiety! I’m hoping this situation resolves itself quickly, though, because I have places to go and people to see, and I don’t want to come home to basenji hair and blood! How could she hate this little guy?

*Yeah, the name’s gotta go. I think we are going to call him Berkeley, since it’s pretty close to Barkley (unfortunately, Peter would not agree to Sparky).

progress report

I am faring okay on the fair isle project. It is slow going, and my stitches are a tad cattywompus, but it’s fun, and I am enjoying the process. I think after the thing is blocked, it will be okay. Besides, I figure all the colors will create a sort of dizzying optical illusion, thus preventing any close scrutiny by eagle-eyed knitters. Here it is so far:

The whole corrugated ribbing thing is really cool, but it kind of flares out. I’m okay with that. Namaste.

the yarn harlot, she is everywhere

I haven’t really been paying much attention to the buzz around the Knitting Olympics, mostly because I am such a failure when it comes to knitalongs and the like. I know the Knitting Olympics has been getting a lot of press, but I was sure surprised to see a big story on it in our local Oregonian newspaper! That Yarn Harlot’s reach is pretty extensive!

And thanks for all your suggestions regarding tinted moisturizer. I didn’t know there were so many Bare Essentuals followers out there! I am definitely planning to head out to Sephora to try it. Are you guys sure, though, that it’s not a hassle? The powder, the swirling, the dustiness, that’s not a pain? I’m also going to check out the mineral foundation by Alima Cosmetics, a local woman who makes mineral makeup.

more face talk

Last year you all gave me outstanding advice when I asked about non-greasy facial moisturizers. I have been happily using the highly recommended Aveeno Positively Radiant Facial Moisturizer ever since. Well, now I need some more advice. I have been thinking that my blotchy face could use a little smoothing out, but let’s face it (ha ha, no pun intended), I am not the foundation-applying sort. So, I’m thinking tinted moisturizers might be the way to go. Please share your thoughts, experiences, and suggestions! Comments on tinted moisturizers from drugstore brands to fancy schmancy ooh-la-la brands welcome and appreciated.

just bead it

Sometimes I get a bee in my bonnet to bead something, even though I know next to nothing about beading. I was inspired by crafty Cara, a member of our crafty group. Okay, so the truth is I just copied one of her designs.
Here I am trying to figure out what to do:

I am a big fan of the TV tray, if you can’t tell.
And here’s the completed necklace!

I quite like it! Now I just need to get into Cara’s jewelry box to find more designs to rip off …

I was supposed to sew today, but I didn’t

Those of you who have been suffering through my blog for a while know about my love for Rose City Textiles, a fabulous fabric store here in Portland that specializes in outdoor and high-tech fabrics. Well, if you can believe it, I hadn’t been there since we moved to Portland, mostly because I knew I would go insane and buy stuff, and I already have plenty of stash fabric and projects. I dragged Peter there today, and yes, I got dizzy and nearly hyperventilated when I saw all the amazing fabrics. I guess I didn’t go too crazy, but did I need any of this? Probably not.

The black cordura (you can barely see it on the left side) is for the bag I have been dreaming about, the nylon lycra is for running tights or maybe a sporty skort, the blue stuff is stretchy fleecy stuff for running tights, and the green fuzzy stuff? It’s fleecy on one side and fuzzy/furry on the outside, perfect for a little jacket!
