frango frenzy

My personal benefactor in Chicago sent me some limited edition peanut butter fudge Frangos.

I guess I picked the wrong day to skip my morning run.

super swap

Anna and I decided to do a little candy and fabric swap. Anna, a Londoner, was itching for some number fabric and some Butterfingers, and I have always pined for some Liberty fabric, and, well, you know me and candy from other places. I received the beautifully wrapped package today. Here’s the candy!

I’ve already sampled one of the milk chocolate caramel biscuit bars and one of the round red foil things (it’s a chocolate-covered marshmallow with biscuit!). YUM.
And the gorgeous Liberty fabric:

The piece in the upper left-hand corner is corduroy! Peter thinks I should make the upper right-hand piece into a kerchief. The cotton is so buttery soft that you’d think it was silk.
And the icing on the cake? These two handcrafted pieces from Anna:

On the left is a little felted lamb. It has a brilliant little beaded chain attached to it, so I can carry it with me all over Portland. On the right is a delicate pin cushion made with various pieces of Liberty fabrics! I guess I should have removed the ribbon so you could see the pieces more clearly. On the bottom of the photo you can barely see a piece of double-sided felt rick rack. Genius!

arithmetic

I don’t know what it is, but lately I have been drawn to numbers. I have the number fabric that I used for my lumbar pillow, and now I have some number fabric that my mother brought back from her recent trip to Japan. How I love this fabric!

I wanted three meters to make a car/trench coat, but they only had two 1-meter pieces left, so that’s what I got. Now I just have to decide what to make. I am thinking about a jean jacket sort of thing if there is enough fabric …

sewing soothes the savage turkey

I braved the sub-freezing temperature in my sewing room and did a little stitching the other day. I had purchased a desk chair at IKEA, but it’s not a cushy chair, and there was nowhere to attach my lumbar cushion. I decided to make a little cover for the cushion:

I attached the cushion with some webbing:

Now I just have to make another cover for the seat cushion. I think I need to add an extra layer of foam to it, cuz this seat is pretty hard!
I also made yet another little pouch. I used some of the Hasi Hester vintage fabric I got at a yard sale last spring.

to knit or not to knit

Now that we have moved north, Peter is lobbying hard for a handknit sweater. In California, it never got quite cold enough for him to wear sweaters on a daily basis. I have only knit one sweater for him, and I knit it nearly 15 years ago.

pp sweater.JPG
There he is wearing it yesterday at dinner. It’s kind of bulky. Anyway, I don’t really want to knit him another sweater. He’s an XL to an XXL, and he is 6’2″. That’s too much yarn and too many stitches! Go to a store, mister! I told him I would consider his request but refused to make any sort of commitment.

welcome to my sock inferno

Once upon a time, I really enjoyed knitting socks. I used to crank them out–all kinds of kooky colors and patterns, fun fur trim before people even thought about novelty yarns. Now, though, I totally suck at knitting socks!

dead sock.JPG
I don’t know what it is. There are so many great sock yarns out now, yet I just can’t seem to finish a pair of socks. I start and restart because I mess up or the socks look too small or too big. Also, I just can’t seem to get a nice, tight weave. My socks are rather holey, with uneven stitches. One needle size will seem too big, but if I switch to a smaller size, they seem too small! Any tricks or words of wisdom out there? PLEASE MAKE THE SOCK MAGIC HAPPEN!

Blogging by Mail 3

Cathy of My Little Kitchen was the gracious hostess of the latest round of Blogging by Mail. It’s a food swap of sorts, and this time it had a bit of a holiday theme.
I received my package yesterday from Randi, and man, was it filled with yummy stuff!

bbm3.JPG
Randi lives in Canada, so she sent some Canadian chocolate bars and Tim Horton’s hot chocolate! She also sent some dishcloths made by her mother-in-law, some homemade kiwi watermelon jam, Israeli couscous, holiday napkins, vanilla beans, bay leaves, some wine information cards, and more. I really enjoyed reading about Randi’s holiday traditions, too.
I don’t know who is going to host the next round of Blogging by Mail, but I highly recommend participating in it if you like regional goodies. I love the personal touch of these swaps!

cupcakes

It was a fairly productive weekend. I finally set up my sewing room. It’s not perfect, but it is functional! I also did some baking. I know artificial food coloring is supposed to be bad for you, but I’ve been dying to make some red velvet cupcakes for a long time:

red velvet cupcakes.JPG
I think I used this recipe, but I got it from a different site that I can no longer find. It’s supposed to be the recipe from the Buttercup Bakery. I used cream cheese frosting instead of the red velvet icing.
Oh, and if you tried to leave a comment but were informed that your comment included “questionable content,” I apologize. I think I broke my blacklist last week. Anyway, my brother has fixed it, so comment away, if you wish!

alotta chocolatta

I am well aware that Targ*t is an evil corporation, and I know Megan is going to beat me for going there, but what’s a weak-willed gal to do when said corporation decides to introduce a mega line of chocolates? I mentioned Choxie before when I bought a couple items, but hey, they were on sale last week, so I went and grabbed some more:

Did I mention that I’m thinking about trying to cut back on my sugar intake? At least all this Choxie isn’t just for me!
