el norte

My friend Wendy and I ventured north to IKEA yesterday. Peter was very jealous because we took the Sprinter, and he is obsessed as all get-out with Sprinters.

We stopped in Chehalis, Washington, at the Kit Carson restaurant for breakfast:

I love pictures of food, but if you don’t, well, sorry, but there’s another one coming up!
We were sufficiently fueled up for our long stretch at IKEA. As you can see, we did some damage:

It’s not just that one cart in the middle; our stuff takes up THREE carts (one regular shopping cart and two of the flatbed ones).
We needed energy for the drive back:

Unfortunately, they did not have princess cake. What’s up with that? We did buy some of those Anna’s ginger thins and some raspberry cookies, so I guess we were okay. We got back just in time to watch Lost!

ahhh, the bad blogging continues

What up, peeps! I guess my life is just so uninteresting lately that I have nothing about which to blog. Thank goodness for Carolyn (formerly of GirlReaction). She sent me this link that not only cracks me up but makes me wish I had this kind of time.

I keep forgetting to blog

Yesterday I didn’t turn my computer on at all! Today I intended to finally set up my sewing room, but that didn’t happen. I did, however, seek inspiration at the Fabric Depot. They were having one of their famous 30% off sales, so Action Hero Melissa and I ventured out there. She controlled herself because she is generally a well-behaved gal, but I ended up adding to my stash:

A couple of Christmas fabrics, because who doesn’t need Christmas fabrics, plus some fun numbered fabric that I have been eyeing for some time. And thank goodness for the nice selection of Dutch goodies, because I have been out of chocolate sprinkles (aka jimmies) and in dire need of some. I got some milk chocolate sprinkles plus a cute little sampler pack that has tiny boxes of dark and milk chocolate sprinkles, some chocolate curls, and maybe some of those pink and white sprinkles. And yes, Fabric Depot also has grapefruit and green apple Mentos. It really is a one-stop shopping center, don’t you think?

norwegian water

Sorry I have been a bad blogger as of late. There just hasn’t been much blog fodder around here. Knitting on the saddle shoulder Noro sweater continues, but the pattern I created with my software? It calls for the sleeves to be sewn to the sweater rather than a seamless, in-the-round job. I am wondering how this will work out. Any thoughts out there?
Today I stopped by the little natural foods store in my parents’ neighborhood (my mother took off for Japan again, which means I am now on Dad Watch), and I made this impulse purchase:

voss.JPG
It’s water! Imported all the way from Norway! In a sleek glass bottle! For $2.95! Would you like to know what it tastes like? Yup, water. Now please excuse me while I go peel the “SUCKER” sticker off the back of my raincoat (actually, maybe I should just add “AND PROUD OF IT” to the sticker?).

missing in action

Sorry I have been absent, but I was really sick and couldn’t get out of bed for two days. It was highly unpleasant, and I do not recommend it. Anyway, Happy Halloween! This is our first Halloween in our new house, and I didn’t know how many trick-or-treaters to expect. I knew it wouldn’t be over 200 like at our old place, so I had to exercise RESTRAINT and go for a moderate amount of candy:

It is 7:40pm now, and we have had just under 50 trick-or-treaters. I still have three bags of unopened candy. They would be more dangerous, I suppose, if they were open.
On another topic, I want to get some Interface FLOR pieces, but I can’t make a decision! Look at all these fun little samples!

Okay, so my favorite one is the super spazzy colorful one, but that also happens to be the most expensive one. Hmph.

Switching soon to elastic waistband pants

Good and interesting food is much more accessible here in Portland than it was in our little California town, and it is difficult to exercise restraint. The other day I visited my mother at Anzen, the Japanese grocery where she works. I saw these limited edition Pocky and had to try them out:

pocky kinako.JPG
Kinako is soy bean flour, and it’s frequently used in Japanese sweets. It is hard to describe how it tastes. Hey, it tastes like soy bean flour! Anyway, the pocky don’t have a very strong kinako flavor, but they are still pretty tasty.
In other eats, I had a great dinner with vacationing food blogger Samantha and her husband Dave. We went to Nuestra Cocina, where they had the most incredible handmade fresh corn tortillas. Yum. I didn’t take any photos because I was trying to come across as, well, normal, but I don’t think I was very successful, since I kept crashing into curbs as I drove us to Pix for dessert (and no, I didn’t have anything to drink).
Oh, and a good review of some Choxie chocolates is here at the candy blog. Of the Choxie I tried, I thought the milk chocolate truffle balls were really good. The centers aren’t as soft as the Lindt truffle balls, but the chocolate was pretty good (not waxy). The chocolate-covered raisins are fine. I’ve had worse, but I’ve probably had better, too.

no cupcake for me

I finished the cupcake hat, but alas, it is too big!

cupcake hat.JPG
I tried to pawn it off on my friend Wendy, who has a big noggin, but she said she doubted she would have occasion to wear a cupcake cap. I then forced it upon her daughter Lillie. I plan to make another one, since I have plenty of yarn. For the bottom, I used Schoeller Stahl Merino Stretch, a soft and squishy and stretchy yarn. For the top, I used Luxury Mohair. I got both items from elann.

random stuff

I painted my office over the weekend (it took all weekend), and I did something I would like to warn you all against doing–ya see, I was at the paint store, and they had these little scent pouches at the counter. You add them to your paint to mask the nasty paint fumes with supposedly more pleasant aromas, such as, oh, fresh sheets or spring gardens, etc. I decided to give the citrus scent a try. Who doesn’t love citrus scents! BIG MISTAKE. It smells like a just-cleaned gas station bathroom, and the odor permeates the entire house. Be warned, dear readers.
But anyway, Saturday was a gorgeous day here in the City of Roses. Peter and Deedle and I went for a nice long walk in the park by our house. It has three reservoirs, lots of little trails, and of course a ton of trees.

I also made giant chocolate chip cookies using peanut butter-chocolate swirled chips and semisweet chips.

super crafty!

Action Hero Melissa and I went to the book launch party for PDX Super Crafty at the swanky Doug Fir Lounge. There was a nice turnout, and we got there early enough to score one of the 100 goodie bags. I also won a raffle prize!

supercrafty.JPG
A PDX Super Crafty t-shirt and a signed copy of the book! The book has 75 fun projects, ranging from jewelry to pasties to decorated bike helmets. It’s a really nicely done book, and it’s great for gifts! You can read more about it (or buy it) here.

a whole lotta choxie

My friend Taya recently told me about a new line of chocolates at Target called Choxie. I googled it but could find no information! Argh! Well, today I went to Target and spotted a big display of Choxie chocolates. They had SO MANY sizes and shapes and flavors that it was a bit overwhelming. I decided that in the interest of science and research, I should sample a couple.

choxie.JPG
Good packaging, don’t you think? I got some chocolate-covered raisins and some milk chocolate truffles. You can also see a cute little post-it pad for breast cancer awareness month. I love all that stuff.
Oh, and thanks to everyone for information about Room&Board furniture. Wanda has offered to test out the couch for us!
